According to Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor, Palestinian doctor Hussam Abu Safia continues to be subjected to exceptionally harsh torture after nearly 18 months in Israeli custody.

Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor reports that Israeli interrogators are attempting to "coerce him into confessing to offences he did not commit, while he remains imprisoned under Israel’s so-called 'Unlawful Combatant' law."

The Palestinian doctor remains imprisoned without charge or trial alongside at least 14 other medical doctors from Gaza, compounding the collapse of the enclave's healthcare infrastructure. Since the beginning of the genocide in the Gaza Strip, Israeli occupation forces have killed approximately 1,700 healthcare workers and detained hundreds more.

Many of these medical professionals were targeted after refusing to abandon their hospitals and patients, marking a systematic campaign to dismantle Gaza's healthcare network and forcibly displace the native population.

In April 2024, a small number of physicians who were able to enter the Sde Teiman detention facility decided they couldn’t remain silent about the horrors they had witnessed there. They first approached Israel’s Ministry of Health and Medical Association, urging them to intervene and put an end to the severe violations of medical ethics taking place there.

When these efforts failed to produce meaningful change, the physicians turned to PHRI and chose to speak out publicly. They described patients being denied critical care; wounded people treated while held in four-point restraints; a medical facility that failed to meet basic standards; and irreversible harm caused by appalling custody conditions and inadequate care. They also reported deaths among detainees held at Sde Teiman.

By April 2024, more than 1,000 Palestinians from Gaza were being held at Sde Teiman, many of them kept restrained around the clock for weeks or even months. The field hospital established at the site in November 2023, intended as an alternative to public hospitals after Israel’s health minister at the time called for Palestinian detainees to be denied treatment there, failed to meet adequate medical standards. As a result, thousands of detainees were deprived of decent health care and, in dozens of cases, of treatment for life-threatening conditions.

Appeals by PHRI and other human rights organizations were ignored by Israeli institutions — until the physicians spoke out. Immediately after going public with their testimonies, the Israeli military began clearing out Sde Teiman. Hundreds were transferred to other facilities, while others were released back to Gaza. By July 2024, fewer than 30 detainees remained. By October, the field hospital had been shut down.

Due anni fa, la Corte Internazionale di Giustizia è stata chiara. Israele avrebbe dovuto:
👉🏻 porre fine all'occupazione del Territorio Palestinese Occupato
👉🏻 cessare tutte le nuove attività di insediamento
👉🏻 evacuare tutti i coloni dal Territorio palestinese occupato
👉🏻 fornire la piena riparazione per i danni causati dai suoi atti

Da parte sua, la comunità internazionale ha l’obbligo di non riconoscere questa occupazione e di fermare ogni accordo commerciale che la alimenti. Oggi, quelle decisioni sono rimaste in gran parte lettera morta e la realtà è ancora molto diversa.

Mentre l'occupazione si intensifica, la violenza continua e il diritto del popolo palestinese all'autodeterminazione viene ulteriormente negato, la comunità internazionale continua a limitarsi a dichiarazioni di circostanza.

Salvo pochissime eccezioni, nessun Paese, Italia compresa, ha introdotto le misure richieste dal più alto organo giurisdizionale delle Nazioni Unite.

Chiediamo al Governo italiano di:
• garantire l'ingresso degli aiuti umanitari a Gaza;
• fermare il commercio con le colonie illegali;
• porre fine all'impunità per i crimini commessi.

Normalizzare la violazione sistematica dei diritti dei palestinesi indebolisce i diritti di tutte e tutti noi. Perché i diritti umani o sono universali, o non esistono.
