6 months ago, we made a change in our household.
First, it felt out of necessity, I was stressed and didn't know how to do it all.
We decided I would stop working and get the kids out of private daycare (because public daycare always felt like the wrong choice for our family anyway). It was time for our freshly turned 5yo to start school anyway.
Wherever we went, looked, booked walk-throughs... Nothing felt right. I stayed restless throughout the entire school search.
I have been conservative from the moment I became a mom. But something shifted. I felt called to be the one teaching my children. I had no idea where to start, but I just started.
Within 2 weeks, everything changed. I fell in love with homeschool and had such a deeply spiritual experience that I could no longer deny that God exists and has been taking care of my family all this time.
6 months later, homeschooling is my favourite part of the day. I taught my child how to read, and I tear up every time she randomly starts reading a sign, a sentence, a logo.
I have never enjoyed cooking or doing the household stuff. I felt like I needed more mental stimulation.
I was diagnosed with ADHD 2 years ago and took meds.
I stopped taking them two months ago.
I now wake up and actually make my bed. I make breakfast every morning without it feeling like a chore. The kitchen actually gets cleaned.
I'm on top of laundry, without it feeling like a punishment.
I love hanging out with the girls, and dare I say, I don't even mind the crafts anymore.
Once I stopped believing I needed to pursue a career and actually followed my gut... I became the mom I wanted to be all those years but wasn't.
The house has become a home, where we don't just spend time between work hours but actually have a fulfilling life.
I'm even noticing a big difference in the mental state of the girls. They are calmer, sillier, sleep better, and overall happier.
I am calmer, happier, more fulfilled. I am enjoying my days instead of going through the motions.
Stepping into what God knew was the right place for a mom has been life changing.
All that changed was me, by the grace of God, and everything fell into place. My kids, my husband, and I are all happier because I stepped away from what the world told me was the right way.
I can't even imagine doing anything else but make a home for my family, be their teacher, and have them learn about Christ while I am learning about Christ.
I am so grateful. π
@jenteach13 This is the biggest problem in schools, in my opinion. The curricula are clearly not working, and your child needs to be lucky to have a teacher that runs the extra mile...
I was very nervous when I started in September and really didn't think I had the patience or follow through to do it.
It has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. It gives our day so much purpose and direction. The kids are thriving, and so am I.
It isn't for everyone, but by far most parents are capable!
@jenteach13 Teachers should be paid fairly, but just raising the pay won't fix the bigger problem. How about better curricula and an actual focus on reading, writing, and arithmetic instead of all these other things that should come after kids can actually read.
Parents are becoming increasingly aware!
Less fear, more knowledge.
(obtained by parents themselves, not the average health care worker.)
It is wild to think that newborns are born with an immediate deficit while the reason for low vit K is both important for the baby during birth and increases naturally by day 7/8.
@HannahWardEdu@DoppioDelights I might need the potty training one. My 3 year old just refuses, lol. "I do potty not."
No problem with the first, my second one will stare me straight into my eyes and just hold her pee. π
Day 47 of the reading curriculum we are currently following.
It's going very well. I love how it's actually phonics based. No sudden words that don't follow the rules, without making them a rare memory word.
Today, she suddenly started reading the words without having to break them down.
Teaching your child how to read is so magical!
