💢 🇾🇪 The Pentagon has admitted, after months of denials, that US airstrikes killed 153 civilians in Yemen last year, a toll independent monitors say is far too low

US military strikes against Ansar Allah (commonly known as the Houthis) in Yemen killed 153 civilians and wounded 243 in 2025, the Pentagon told Congress in a report obtained by US media, its first acknowledgment of the civilian toll of the bombing campaign President Donald Trump ordered in March 2025.

All the deaths came from three April 2025 strikes, per the report: five killed near Sanaa on April 6, 80 killed at the Ras Isa fuel port on April 17, and 68 killed near Saada on April 28. Human Rights Watch had said the Ras Isa strike should be investigated as a war crime.

The figure is a fraction of independent counts. The Yemen Data Project recorded at least 238 civilians killed and 467 wounded in the campaign, codenamed Operation Rough Rider, and the monitor Airwars put the toll around 258. The Intercept reported that even a US official called the Pentagon’s numbers “lowball.” The Department of Defense had initially denied killing any civilians at all, and 15 further incidents remain under review.
