REST IN PEACE: Grade 6 Learner (11) Dies by Hanging in Suspected Hangman Game💔🕊️

My heart aches for little Kungawo Mehlo. 💔 No child should ever lose their life so tragically.

Kungawo Mehlo, an 11-year-old Grade 6 learner at Sydenham Primary School in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), Eastern Cape, was found dead on 22 June 2026.

She was discovered in her bedroom at her home in Sydenham/Pancras Street area. Her family found her with a gnarled rope around her neck. She had already passed away when discovered.

Her grandmother had briefly gone to the shop; upon returning, she learned of the tragedy from family.

The family strongly believes she may have been imitating or following instructions from a mobile phone game/challenge called “Hangman” involving tying something around her neck. This has led to widespread warnings to parents about monitoring what children download and play.

SAPS has opened an inquest docket and is investigating the full circumstances. They are looking into all possibilities, including any online influences.

School tributes describe Kungawo as a smart, sporty, and well-liked learner who will be greatly missed.

This incident has gone viral with parents being urged to:

Check and monitor the games/apps their children play. Talk to kids about online dangers and “challenges” that can seem harmless but are risky.

Be extra vigilant with younger children using mobile phones. Tragedies like this (and past choking games) show real risks from certain online trends. It is a heartbreaking loss for the Mehlo family and the Sydenham community.

My deepest deepest condolences to Kungawo’s family, friends, and school. May she rest in peace. 💔

I’m not a Taylor Swift hater (beyond the obvious billionaires shouldn’t exist etc) but it is amazing how this wedding played into literally every single negative stereotype about her- like her biggest hater couldn’t have designed it better.
