Reid’s book was blank bc it was being used to project him into the trial room, and when Subaru read that, it sent him to the HoM. What you saw in the flashback was Rui eating his memories and taking his body

Iirc, Subaru tried to read Reid’s book, ended up in the Hall of Memories, where Louis Arneb (Gluttony) was, then she ate Subaru’s memories. Later on, she takes another body (one loop Rem) carrying Subaru’s memories of RbD. That breaks the taboo and unleashes Envy
