Congratulations Alberta, you just bought yourselves a TransMountain-like pipeline.

If all goes well it will be operational by 2035, and will only cost $50 billion in taxpayer money.... money we don't have.

Let's run some very simple economics.

It will transport 1 million barrels per day, at a fee of $10/barrel. That means it will generate $10,000,000/day in revenue, which is $3.65 billion/year. But it will cost at least $1 billion/year to operate (power, labour, chemicals, maintenance, interest on the borrowed money, carbon tax, etc).

So the initial payout is $50 B divided by $2.65 B/yr. which is 18.8 years. Who wants to wait almost 20 years before they get a return on their investment?

The economics don't work because the regulations make the pipeline too expensive and risky. There was a time, lest than 15 years ago, when the private sector could have built this for $10 billion.

This is not a win. The real problems aren't being addressed, and this is making things worse.

Remember that time when Carney said his government would build 500,000 homes a year? He even re-introduced the WWII housing catalogue.

In April, the total value of building permits issued in Canada decreased $1.0 billion (-7.6%) to $12.5 billion. Both the non-residential sector (-10.5%) and the residential sector (-5.5%) contributed to the decline in construction intentions.

We're not going to build our way out of the housing crisis.

The Soviet whaling fleet killed 180,000 whales between 1948 and 1973, delivering rotten carcasses that nobody wanted to eat. Soviet citizens had zero demand for whale meat. The ships hunted anyway, fulfilling quotas handed down from central planners who counted tons of dead whale as economic output.

This was bureaucratic box-checking that nearly drove multiple whale species to extinction. Soviet whalers targeted endangered right whales and humpbacks specifically because they were larger, helping them hit tonnage targets faster. The meat rotted on deck during long voyages back to port, where officials dutifully recorded the numbers and sent reports to Moscow declaring another successful harvest.

Central planners measured success in tons harvested, not consumer satisfaction or long-term sustainability. Factory managers got promoted for exceeding whale quotas, regardless of whether anyone actually wanted whale meat (they didn't). The feedback mechanism that normally connects production to human needs had been severed entirely. When bureaucrats replace market prices with administrative targets, you get mass slaughter with zero purpose.

You still see this today every time politicians promise to "create jobs" in industries that lose money year after year. When government agencies measure their success by dollars spent rather than problems solved. When university administrators chase enrollment numbers instead of student outcomes.

Remove the profit motive and price signals, and you get 180,000 dead whales rotting in the sun while commissars celebrate meeting their targets. You don't get rational planning.

Socialism is fundamentally destructive to the environment and inevitably leads to ecological disasters.

Don't bother signing Corb Lund's "No New Coal Mining in the Eastern Slopes of the Rocky Mountains" petition. Elections Alberta didn't consult with First Nations on that one either, so it's invalid.

I didn't want to make this post...

I didn't want to let the secret out. But the time has come. Stick with me to the end, it's worth it...

A referendum is not an election.

You know how ridings are split up? You can have 1 constituency with 99 conservatives to 1 liberal- and then 4 more with 40 cons to 60 libs...

Though you got 259 conservative votes to 241 Liberal votes... The score is actually 4:1 in favor of the Liberals.

That's the result of the first past the post electoral system: you can form a majority government with a minority of support in the right regions.

That doesn't apply in a referendum.

1 Albertan = 1 vote- and there's no way to mitigate that. You get a voice whether you live in Calgary or Chipman.

Nobody can use a mathematical formula to silence you. You will be heard.

What does this mean? All those rural town coming in at 95-98% support for independence... those votes past 50% aren't discredited. They're heard.

In other words... The polls are all reflecting wrong because you'd have to poll a biased population to get a real result- and the whole basis of polling is that it's supposed to be unbiased to be good.

So, why would I hold on to this and not point it out sooner?

Well, while this is good news for us... it lets the other side time to cheat & respond to the issue. And I largely think they haven't even done the math yet... and they don't realize what a lock this vote is going to be.

But if I could have one message to relay for Oct 19, I want you to know that your vote counts. We need your vote whether you live in Fort McKay, Fort McMurray, or Fort Saskatchewan- or anywhere in-between.

This is a time of hope, when we will have our shot at what the last 100 years has desperately wished for.
