Here's a bit of controversy early in the week. I don't believe COACHING COURSES have made coaches better at coaching. I think they've educated coaches. They've accredited and licensed coaches. They've made coaches more competent at doing some elements of the practice of coaching. But - if you feel that coaching is the art of inspiring change through emotional connection.....If you believe that coaching is about connecting, engaging and inspiring the hearts, minds and spirits of athletes...If you believe that coaching is one human being committing selflessly to guiding and leading another to realize their potential....then those ubiquitous coaching "levels" courses - which are still rolled out around the world - haven't made coaches better at coaching.

So the question is - if coaching courses haven't made coaches better at coaching - why do we still do them? Are they basically just minimum standard, risk mitigation exercises?

And an even better question is - what's the alternative?
If we truly want to coach coaches to be better at coaching, what's a more effective mechanism for doing it?
