North-West University (NWU) has secured a major milestone in establishing the Desmond Tutu School of Medicine, after the Council on Higher Education (CHE) accredited its six-year MBChB programme.

The programme will be offered at the Potchefstroom Campus, with the first students expected to begin in 2028. NWU is now pursuing professional accreditation from the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), with a visit planned for February 2027.

The medical school will become South Africa’s 11th, aimed at helping address the country’s shortage of doctors and healthcare needs, particularly in underserved communities.

The university still needs to finalise partnerships with the University of the Witwatersrand and the National Health Laboratory Service. The curriculum will emphasise clinical competence, ethics, compassion, justice, integrity and service, reflecting the values of its namesake, Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

NWU says the CHE accreditation marks a crucial turning point after years of planning and development, with the university now focused on delivering the school by January 2028.

Reiger Park: Anti-Gang

At this stage, SAPS can confirm that two members attached to the Anti-Gang Unit were fatally shot in Reiger Park at about 19:30 this evening.

Preliminary reports indicate that the members were part of a crime prevention team conducting patrols in the area. After hearing gunshots, they drove towards the source of the shots, where they were allegedly ambushed.

The Provincial Commissioner of the Police in Gauteng Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni has mobilised all the necessary resources including Crime Intelligence, Tracking Team, Crime Scene Management as well as the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation.

Legal counsel representing Brigadier Dineo Mokwele has formally submitted a complaint to the IDAC ombudsman.

This complaint is formally submitted under Section 22A of the National Prosecuting Authority Act 32 of 1998, as amended (the "NPA Act"), and is directed at Advocate Andrea Johnson ("Advocate Johnson") in her capacity as the Head of the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption ("IDAC").

The complaint pertains to significant allegations of misconduct, misuse of prosecutorial authority, failure to exercise prosecutorial powers in good faith, and behavior inconsistent with the constitutional obligations incumbent upon all members of the National Prosecuting Authority, especially the Head of IDAC.

The legal representatives assert that Advocate Johnson acknowledged her lack of knowledge regarding our Client's qualifications. Despite this admitted lack of information, she nonetheless concluded that our Client is unqualified for her current senior position. This concession presents an irreconcilable inconsistency.

The legal representatives further state that the concessions made before the Commission raise serious questions regarding the adherence to constitutional obligations concerning our Client.

The Madlanga Commission today heard fresh evidence that has intensified scrutiny over businessman Suliman Carrim’s repeated applications to postpone his testimony.

Evidence leaders told the Commission they had obtained information indicating Carrim was spending up to eight hours a day outside the medical facility where he was receiving treatment.

They argued this raised questions about the severity of his condition and his ability to testify.

The Commission also examined conflicting accounts from Carrim’s two wives regarding his movements.

According to the evidence leaders, their explanations changed after they were confronted with objective information relating to his whereabouts.

Carrim’s treating doctor also came under scrutiny after reportedly giving differing explanations about who had the authority to approve Carrim leaving the medical facility, adding to concerns about the reliability of the medical evidence presented to support the postponement.

Although the Commission obtained CCTV footage relevant to Carrim’s movements, it was not shown during proceedings.

Carrim’s legal team argued there was no need to present the footage because his presence at the location was effectively admitted.

The hearing also included arguments over geolocation data and whether Carrim should be required to undergo an independent medical assessment to verify his fitness to testify.

Carrim has still not given details about his accountants and auditors which the commission has repeatedly asked for.

The latest developments have deepened questions about Carrim’s repeated delays in appearing before the Madlanga Commission, with evidence leaders suggesting the available evidence should be carefully weighed when considering any further postponement requests.

A decision on the postponement application has been reserved.
