We can't believe it has been a whole month since we took kids and headteachers to Westminster!

This inspirational group of young people told MPs why it's time to lift the burden of SATs.

"SATs deeply emotionally affect me," explained Year 6 pupil Margot (botttom right). "I've been anxious for ages. Lots of tears have been shed."

"I have dyslexia – it's like my brain is on half speed. So how's that going to be fair?"

Delayed SATs results are finally released today.

More than 200,000 pupils will be told they haven’t ‘reached the expected standard’. That’s a huge number of 10- and 11-year-olds heading off to secondary school in September feeling they have failed primary school.

A disproportionate number of those pupils will come from disadvantaged backgrounds or have SEND.

It’s time for the government to listen to heads, parents, teachers and pupils who understand that SATs don’t work. It’s time for forward-looking, fairer assessments which support all children, regardless of their circumstances.

A small percentage change is not an indication of ‘high and rising standards’. Standards should not be based on a narrow set of tests following a year of intensive cramming.

As Paul Whiteman of @NAHTnews said today, “SATs tell teachers nothing they don’t already know from working with pupils every day, and are instead unfairly used to judge and compare school performance.”

Now that they are finally here, this year’s delayed results are another demonstration of the unnecessary pressure, stress and anxiety of a system which places too much emphasis on end-of-year-6 exams.

SATs fail all children, not just the 37% who will start secondary school having been told they have not ‘reached the expected standard’. A disproportionate number of those pupils will come from disadvantaged backgrounds or have SEND.

A small percentage change is not an indication of ‘high and rising standards’. Standards should not be based on a narrow set of tests following a year of intensive cramming. Contrary to the government’s ambition to provide a ‘rich, broad and inclusive education for all children’, these exams narrow the curriculum, cause anxiety and stress, and are particularly harmful to children from disadvantaged backgrounds or those with SEND.

It’s time for the government to listen to heads, parents, teachers and pupils who understand that SATs don’t work. It’s time for forward-looking, fairer assessments which support all children, regardless of their circumstances, promote a love of learning and effectively measure school performance.
