The problem isn't Trump. The problem is the US.
When the outside world observes Trump's insane behaviour and his threats against allies, and we at the same time observe that there is no real action from the US public, Congress, the US Supreme Court, or the US media about this insanity, we will all have to conclude that the US accepts this behaviour.
The public in the US think the US is entitled to a certain position in the world where there is no room for decent behaviour and where there are no norms and rules.
That means that we all have to conclude that the US — not only Trump — has betrayed the international order that the US, with its Western partners, were the main architects of after the Second World War.
This is the conclusion that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney so clearly laid out in his speech at Davos yesterday. We simply cannot trust the US to play by the rules any more. Therefore, we also fundamentally have to ask ourselves — should we trust the financial and economic structure which is an integral part of the global rules-based order?
Americans live in the illusion that the US can do everything on its own, despite the fact that the US for nearly 20 years has lived beyond its means.
US private and government consumption has been funded by, among others, European central banks and pension funds. But we now have to ask ourselves — why would we trade in dollars? Why would we put our savings into US Treasury bonds?
If the US is not a rules-based society, we cannot trust the dollar to be a stable currency, and it would be insane to hold dollars. As domestic US institutions are eroded and governance structures destroyed, the US will be turned into an emerging market economy — or more accurately, a de-merging economy.
If the US threatens the territory of allies, then the US acts as an authoritarian bully nation. Nobody in their right mind would lend money to the US government. If the US doesn't live up to its international obligations and respect the sovereignty of other nations, why would we expect the US government to honour its debts?
If Trump can tariff nations that will not give up their territory, then there is certainly no reason to believe that the US will not introduce capital controls. And if that is a risk, why would you risk investing in the US?
It is not a question about Europe standing up to the US. It is a question about being prudent with our investments — about reducing risks.
Every day Trump remains in office, distrust of the US increases, and the cost for the US will go up day by day. And this is irreversible. It takes years to build trust, but you can destroy it by your actions in minutes.
Europe has now completely lost trust in the US. And so has Canada. It is up to the people of the US to demonstrate that Trump is an 'outlier', and it is up to the American people to stop him.
If you don't do that, we will have to assume that this is what the US is about — whether the name of the President is Trump or something else, whether the President is a Republican or a Democrat.
Bondi: Instead of Ghislaine Maxwell, you should be talking about Iryna Zarutska. You don’t talk about that.
Ross: I have been talking about it. We’re going to move back to you.
Bondi: I bet we are.
Ross: YES, OF COURSE. YOU’RE HERE TO TESTIFY. THAT’S THE WHOLE POINT.
WOW. Pam Bondi just tried to dodge Epstein questions by bragging about the stock market.
Pressed on victims and accountability, she snapped:
“The Dow is over 50,000… The S&P is near 7,000… The Nasdaq is smashing records. That’s what we should be talking about.”
Translation:
Ignore the trafficking. Ignore the cover-ups. Look at Wall Street.
That’s moral bankruptcy.
Rep. Joe Neguse: "That man works for you now?…The man in that video…yelling 'Kill 'em all' at police officers on January 6. His name is Jared Wise."
Pam Bondi: "He does work for us."
Neguse: "This is an individual who a federal grand jury indicted for two felonies and four misdemeanor related to his participation in the attack on Jan. 6…This is who you choose as the chief law enforcement officer of the USA to hire at the DOJ?"
Bondi: "He was pardoned by President Trump."
Neguse: "Pardoned for yelling 'Kill 'em' at police officers."
Today’s Pam Bondi hearing, in a nutshell.
Democratic Congresswoman: “Ms Bondi, there are a number of Epstein survivors in the room today. Could you turn around and acknowledge their presence?”
Bondi: “The Dow is up over 50,000! Acknowledge that!”
WOW! A Message I just got from a rather well known 3-time Trump voter:
“I Voted for Trump. After Watching Pam Bondi Today, I’m DONE.
I believed in law and order. I believed in accountability. I believed the people in charge would answer hard questions, especially about something as serious as Jeffrey Epstein and the victims who were trafficked and abused.
Today, I watched Attorney General Pam Bondi testify before Congress.
And I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.
When Democrats asked about the Epstein files, about the survivors, about whether powerful men were being protected, she deflected.
She talked about how great the Dow is doing. The Dow!!
All While members of Congress were asking about victims of sex trafficking.
And then, when she was asked whether she would apologize for the DOJ releasing private information about Epstein survivors, twice, she refused.
No apology. No acknowledgment. Just attacks, deflection, and finger-pointing.
That’s not what I voted for.
If Republicans truly believe in protecting children, in backing law enforcement, in standing up for victims, then why is our Attorney General unable to answer basic questions about one of the biggest sex trafficking scandals in modern history?
Why can’t she simply say, “We made a mistake. I’m sorry to the victims”?
If you can’t apologize to survivors whose private information was exposed, what exactly do you stand for?
I didn’t leave MAGA because Democrats convinced me.
I left because I watched our own leadership dodge questions about sex trafficking victims and boast about the stock market instead.
And I’m done."
In any other administration, this would be a huge story. In this administration, it can barely get oxygen because it's buried under a daily torrent of destruction, criminality, and abuse of power. https://t.co/bmFfgDlTy6
🚨BREAKING: ICE agents in Minneapolis violently detained, threatened, and arrested a U.S. citizen for one reason only, he refused to prove his citizenship.
In the video, agents immediately escalate to physical force. A man stands with his hands up, repeatedly saying, “I’m not doing anything,” while agents shove him, force him against his car, and begin an illegal search.
No crime. No warrant. No probable cause.
An agent falsely claims, “That’s assault,” while they are actively assaulting a U.S. citizen who is complying and not resisting.
Moments later, the agent admits the truth, saying, “And all we needed was your ID,” openly acknowledging this was an unlawful detention based solely on a refusal to produce identification.
That is not legal.
The short agent then threatens, “Don’t move or you will be fucking tased.”
The man calmly responds, “I’m not moving.”
The short agent escalates again, snarling, “You’re a fucking bitch, and you’re going to learn the hard way.”
That is a direct threat of violence against a U.S. citizen whose hands are already behind his back.
They dig through his pockets anyway, repeating, “I just asked you for an ID,” as if that excuses violating the Fourth Amendment.
Then, in a moment that exposes the entire operation, the short agent announces, “He has a gun on him! Wouldn’t you look at that.”
As if Minnesota is not a conceal-carry state.
The man immediately responds, “A fully registered firearm. Because I’m a U.S. citizen.”
The short agent casually tosses the firearm onto the car after removing the magazine, demonstrating reckless handling of a legally owned weapon.
By this point, they have removed his wallet, yet, still do not check his ID, and still continue the arrest.
The man states the obvious, “Unlawful arrest.”
The short agent replies, “We’ll see about that.”
When asked what crime he committed, the short agent deflects, saying, “We’re going to talk about that when we get in the car,” knowing full well he is on camera and cannot articulate a lawful reason.
Only then do agents begin changing their story, claiming the man “reached for something.”
The man immediately corrects them, he reached for his whistle.
ICE agents already admitted the detention was because he refused to show ID. They did not know he was carrying a firearm until after the illegal search. Now they are retroactively inventing justification.
The video contradicts every word they say.
This wasn’t law enforcement. This was intimidation, retaliation, and a fishing expedition carried out by armed agents.
If not carry papers, as a U.S. citizen, gets you assaulted and arrested, then this isn’t law enforcement. It’s a police state.
@Timcast When you go to an Apple store and steal a bunch of iPhones, do you have "free iPhones"?
Maduro is a d--k but... don't you think that oil belongs to the people of Venezuela?
Morals? Who needs those when you're a famous right-wing "influencer"?
Rand Paul: "It looks to me like they're trying to pin the blame on somebody else and not them. Secretary Hegseth said he had no knowledge of this and it did not happen. It was fake news. It didn't happen. And then the next day, from the podium of the WH, they're saying it did happen. So either he was lying to us on Sunday or he's incompetent and didn't know what had happened."
@daviddoel@fordnation Who are you calling idiot. The american public is directly responsible for anything elected officials do. The fact that Trump carries on his trade war despite public disapproval is because the GOP doesn't act on their disapproval in any way, so Trump isn't incentivized to listen
