Fun fact: this scene is based off true events. The story came from someone Affleck interviewed while preparing the project; that person recounted a real armed-robbery escape scenario in which an officer essentially chose not to engage and looked away rather than confront heavily armed suspects. Affleck chose to incorporate that idea into the movie because it struck him as a vivid example of the kind of tension and realism he wanted.
