🚨Roy Keane on Mike Maignan’s red card against Bournemouth:

🗣️Roy Keane: “I rewatched the challenge again and again because I wanted to be absolutely certain I hadn’t missed something.

Maignan has his eyes on the ball. Adams is right in front of him, getting close, and Mike puts his hand out and catches him in the face.

Adams goes down, cries out, and suddenly the referee, Vasilios Fotias, reaches for his pocket and produces a red card.

I sat there thinking, “What on earth is going on here?”

Now, I’m not saying Maignan should be allowed to put his hands in another player’s face. You have to be careful. But the speed at which that decision was made, the circumstances of the game, and the consequences of it those are the things I want people to look at.

Ruben Amorim was already watching his AC Milan side lose 1–0. It had been a horrible night for them, and then suddenly it became a nightmare. They lose their goalkeeper, concede a penalty, and Bournemouth score to make it 2–0.

Just like that, Amorim’s Milan are in an even bigger hole.

And this is where I have a problem. The referee has to understand the magnitude of the decision he’s making. A red card changes everything, particularly when you’re sending off a goalkeeper in a match where his team is already chasing the game.

People will say the referee followed the rules. Fine. But football isn’t just about reaching into your pocket and showing cards. It’s about understanding what you’ve seen and making sure your decision is justified.

I’ve seen players go down holding their faces after the slightest contact. I’ve seen much worse challenges receive less punishment. So naturally, when I see a decision like this, I want to understand the reasoning behind it.

Maignan made contact with Adams. That’s clear. But was it really a straight red? That’s the question Fotias has to answer.

Because now Ruben Amorim has to reorganize his team, he’s lost his goalkeeper, and the entire match has changed. Then the penalty goes in, Bournemouth make it 2–0, and Milan are left trying to recover from a situation that has spiraled out of control.

For me, the biggest question isn’t whether Maignan made contact. He did. It’s whether that contact deserved a red card. Because one decision has turned a bad night for Ruben Amorim and AC Milan into a disaster and when a referee makes a decision with consequences that big, he has to get it right.
