After a long battle with cancer, Tiana Mangakahia died at the age of 30 on Sept. 11.
She was a Syracuse point guard. A two-time All-ACC First-Team selection. A breast cancer survivor.
But she was so much more than that.
In honor of an unforgettable person 🧵
Wow.
Everyone who’s watched Syracuse lacrosse knows how valuable Odierna’s presence is for that team. He might be SU’s most vocal leader on the sideline.
Some massive shoes to fill for whoever comes next.
Breaking: John Odierna will be head coach at @StagsMensLax, sources told IL's @TerenceFoy.
Odierna has been the DC at Syracuse for three seasons, twice advancing to Championship Weekend.
Fittingly, before his second summer as Chatham's manager, my first Substack story is on former 15-year MLB reliever Dennis Cook.
When I profiled him last summer, I had to leave out a ton of anecdotes.
Here's one, where he gave me a step-by-step lesson on defacing a baseball.
Tomorrow, I’ll head to Chatham to begin my second summer writing for the @ChathamAnglers.
With that news, I’d also like to announce my Substack, Point Palmar. There’s some stories I’ve ended up leaving untold, and this is where I’ll tell them.

@SuboSays@ThisIsNotDSP He used to be, his recent performances have been some of the dumbest displays of MMA I have ever seen
Absolutely inexplicable style change
@bykevinclark@K_Williamsmedia Washington is the most egregious example of this, anyone trying to make it out of Landover on a game night might as well just forget about it
Would be a great signing for any team.
There shouldn’t be any questions about his commitment to lacrosse. Before the ACC Tournament, I talked to Finn about his plans after Syracuse.
He made it very clear that he plans to play in both the PLL and NLL.
For all the PLL moves today, one of the biggest is one that didn't get made. It doesn't sound like anyone has claimed Syracuse attackman Finn Thomson.
Context with Thomson is the potential visa wait time since he's Canadian. That delay may be a factor in the decision to add him.
Some personal news, as they say:
Excited beyond belief to be joining @NOTUSreports as a sports reporter, covering a mash-up of familiar topics for me: the overlap of sports + politics, the overlap of college sports + Capitol Hill, and ... wait for it ... the Nationals!
When I was a kid, all I wanted to do was write cover stories for Sports Illustrated. I loved every day I got to do that — for more than 12 years. I’m part of the layoffs today. Now I’m standing on the side of the highway, holding a cardboard sign. It says: WILL WRITE FOR FOOD
All three members of Syracuse’s first attacking line are in attendance.
Here’s Finn Thomson & Michael Leo supporting their teammate.

News: Last July, Lars Tiffany received a three-year extension offer. After negotiating terms, talks stalled over the winter.
He signed the offer in March and, in the wake of @UVAMensLax announcing last week he won't return in ’27, he's seeking compensation he believes he's owed.
@intrater@DOsports It certainly wasn’t pretty, but no. His worst game was the first UNC matchup in Chapel Hill.
Got benched and saved just 37% of his shots.
I’ve watched this team all year.
This is nothing new. “The ‘Cuse stuff” has been an issue all season.
After the Final Four loss, I asked Gait why he can’t get his team to play disciplined lacrosse.
Here’s what he said.
I thought there was a path for Cuse to still do the Cuse stuff (turnovers, penalties, assorted dumb shit) and still win.
It wasn’t going to come with McCool just being Ok. And honestly, not sure it was ever possible if you give up *Four* EMO goals
Wrote another column last night.
Largely focuses on this clip. Syracuse has a starting lineup full of seniors, and yet has consistently played undisciplined lacrosse all season.
It’s no surprise that it cost them against Notre Dame.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Joey Spallina was more honest that he’d ever been after Syracuse’s loss.
“I lied.”
The attack promised to end his SU career with a national championship.
It ended with a scoreless, two-point game in yesterday’s Final Four loss to Notre Dame.
Despite Finn Thomson’s four goals and John Mullen’s 14 faceoff wins, Syracuse men’s lacrosse's season concluded with a 15-7 loss to Notre Dame. More observations from SU's Final Four defeat, from @mpalmarDO.
