@gaghyogi49@DrPCooper1@galaxyclassproj That's my guess, but I don't know for sure. There are loads of neon loops mounted in the upper saucer which run quite hot, and they would be close to the lower part in that area, so it's plausible. I'll ask Bill George if I see him at Wonderfest...๐
@DrPCooper1@galaxyclassproj@gaghyogi49 I've seen one, by Lewis Niven, one of OTOY's digital artists. I literally couldn't tell that I WASN'T looking at the filming model! Stunning! But, it was a labour of love and he had a lot of time to nail everything. A luxury most "official" ones don't have
@DrPCooper1@galaxyclassproj@gaghyogi49 Yeah, me neither! Looks like the neon light loop inside that area of the saucer got too hot during shooting and softened the fibreglass. Goes to show how much couldn't be seen on CRT screens and VHS tapes back then!
@PetriRaiha@gaghyogi49 Yep, positive. The 4 footer was built at Greg's shop yes, but he also subcontracted for ILM, he helped build the 6' model. ILM had many copies of the same brass detail sheets and used them on a lot of models, Greg would've had no problem procuring a sheet or two for himself
@gaghyogi49 I built a replica using original casts of the 4' a couple of years ago. I'll be showing a lot more info about the project and some cool inside information about the original model very soon. I'll tag you in the posts if you'd like?
@birvin12@gaghyogi49 The 4' was built between season 2 & 3, and debuted in the S3 episode "The Defector". The 6' was too large and cumbersome to use in the relatively small stage at Image G, so the 4' was built to replace it
A few beauty shots of the 4' Enterprise D, built for the National Film & Scifi Museum using casts from the production moulds.
If you haven't seen it already, here's a little teaser of how the project came together....

So, a couple of years ago I took on a dream project for The National Film & Sci-Fi Museum here in the UK....to build a replica of the Enterprise D, using casts of the original 4' filming model!
Here's a teaser, LOTS more to come!

Well, true to form I forgot to post this here yesterday....๐คฆโโ๏ธ Happy 1701 Day!
Here's the biggest 1701 I've ever built, using casts of the original 4' filming model of the Enterprise D for The National Film & Scifi Museum here in the UK. A real dream project!
