Flynn is an architect who somehow doesn’t get mentioned amongst the names like MacKenzie and Tillinghast and Raynor, but he should be.

Shinnecock Hills, Kittansett, Cherry Hills…his work has stood the test of time. The Country Club is no exception.

Set on the east side of Cleveland, one might not expect the sprawling, isolated golf course you find. The land has tons of movement and unique features that provide lots of interest.

Flynn routed the course perfectly. Despite the hills, it’s not a hard walk. (And we were on our 2nd walking 18 of the day.) It makes incredible use of
of the natural features, the 17th short par 4 being a highlight.

There is lots of strategy in where you place your ball. There aren’t a ton of trees in play, but the ones that are really dictate the angles. The fairways are wide, but the angles almost always matter.

The conditions are excellent. The greens roll true and fast, the fairways firm, and the aesthetic features are maintained well.

Gil Hanse fully renovated the course and he did a great job. The aesthetics really pop, the golden fescue and bunker feathering providing great visuals.

The tree removal has been intense and just a few more would lead to opening up some amazing views of the course. But there is something to be said for the feeling of an isolated walk in the woods. Maybe not every course should be a wide open vista?

Overall, The Country Club is just a fantastic old school classic. Truly a gem that gets overlooked a bit on the national scene and shouldn’t be. And William Flynn is a legend!
