We are heartbroken by this and stand in solidarity with our colleagues @LAistUnion. This follows layoffs at public media shops across the U.S. and comes less than a year after LAist eliminated 21 roles in a "restructuring."
Please support their work however you can.
The news is out to members: LAist will be offering buyouts to staff. It may not be enough to prevent layoffs.
There will be plenty of work happening over the next few weeks with our union, but I ask that if you love LAist, consider donating: https://t.co/tgyAd8Sfu2
Today @LAist announced the plan to eliminate 21 roles, including at least 7 unit members, amid a company-wide “restructuring,” that will reduce the newsroom by 10%.
We heard powerful testimony from some of @Marketplace’s lowest-paid producers during our last bargaining session. They deserve a living wage under our new contract.
🧵Here are some highlights:
News: NPR to lay off about 10 percent of its workforce.
CEO John Lansing says ad revenue for podcasting shriveled even as general economy seems on mend.
He promises NPR will build on its mission and values but adds, ""This will be a major loss."

Today we were ready to work for as long as it took to reach a fair deal, but management walked away from the table with five hours to go. It’s official: @NYTimesGuild members are walking out for 24 hours on Thursday. We know what we’re worth.
Our colleagues at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram are on strike against McClatchy, owned by the hedge fund Chatham Asset Management. They've been fighting for a fair contract and a livable wage. Please support them. https://t.co/O5VcRTleXI
We're proud of our MPR/APM colleagues at @mplaceunion, who have been pushing for a contract for almost a year. The people who do the work of journalism deserve fair compensation and a respectful workplace. Please support them.
Can you believe we’ve been negotiating our first contract for almost a year? 😳
Neither can we. 😅 We’re back at it today, and we’ll work as long as it takes to get our @marketplace colleagues a fair contract and living wages. #WeMakeMarketplace ✊
I report for KPCC/LAist, and I'm also part of our union's bargaining committee. We've been at the table since July working on a new contract.
I'm fighting for a fair contract because a living wages should be the bare minimum. ✊

@KPCCLAistUnion
American Public Media pays its executives more than almost every nonprofit media organization. The same is not true for its journalists. Now, management is trying to deny overtime to some of the hardest working reporters in the business. Please support @mplaceunion.
Yesterday @marketplace management told us (via Jones Day) they have “no appetite” to provide comp time when our members work a holiday, or put in a 10 hour day.
So APMG wants low salary minimums, no comp time, and no overtime for most of us. 🤔
More soon. #WeMakeMarketplace
We sent this letter to MPR President @DPDREW and @Marketplace VP and General Manager @ScarThinc after last week's bargaining session. More than 95% of our unit signed it. #WeMakeMarketplace ✊
⚠️ It’s time to bargain ⚠️
We’re back at the table with @MPR/@ampubmedia to talk about:
🦃 Holiday pay
👩💻 Standby pay
😓 Overtime and comp time
And, as always, a REAL pay package that gives our @Marketplace colleagues what they’re worth. #WeMakeMarketplace ✊
No one should have to ask themselves, “Can I afford to work at @Marketplace?” Right now, many employees have to, and the union is doing something about it. #WeMakeMarketplace
The minimum salaries offered by @AmPubMedia/@MPR management and @JonesDay ignore what's realistic for the cost of living and the amount of work that goes into making the quality reporting you rely on.
We’re back at the bargaining table, negotiating minimum salaries that ensure all the reporters, producers, and writers at @Marketplace are paid a living wage. Many in our unit say working at APMG isn't sustainable right now.
Congratulations to our colleagues in Pittsburgh for unionizing with @sagaftra. Management at @905wesa and @wyep should voluntarily recognize the union and start out the relationship collaboratively and respectfully.
👋 We're back at the table! anxiously awaiting a response on our salary proposal.
Marketplace says it wants to be a “destination employer” for a diverse group of journalists. We share that goal, and we’ll work to get a contract that keeps us on track. #WeMakeMarketplace ✊
