Invisible Boys (2025 Stan series, not a feature film) is a raw 10-episode Australian queer drama adapted from Holden Sheppardโs YA novel by Nicholas Verso and a queer writing team.
Set in Geraldton, Western Australia, during the 2017 same-sex marriage plebiscite, it follows closeted teen Charlie (Joseph Zada) who is outed after a hookup with a married man.
This draws him into a tight circle with farmhand Matt (Joe Klocek), ambitious Zeke (Aydan Calafiore), and Indigenous AFL hopeful Hammer (Zach Blampied).
From a queer perspective, the series shines in its unapologetic frankness: steamy intimacy, messy desire, small-town isolation, and the healing power of chosen family. It rejects sanitized respectability, centering regional, working-class gay teens with complex, horny, angry, and vulnerable lives. Reviewers praise its authenticity, chemistry, and punk energy as the kind of affirming, imperfect story many queer viewers wish theyโd had as teens.
It can veer toward heavier trauma in later episodes, risking familiar tropes, and its explicit content suits older teens/adults. Overall, itโs a gloriously messy marvel of queer representation that makes the โinvisibleโ visible through solidarity and honesty.
Strongly recommended for fans of gritty coming-of-age queer stories
