Story Time
I graduated top of my class, all my lecturers wanted me to start my master’s right away, I even got an assistantship role in the department, but I just couldn’t see myself teaching biochemistry. Then came my first job offer at Mr. Biggs as a restaurant supervisor.
Things (privileges) we take for granted
Had a long chat with someone today and the story sounded epic
- came to Abuja after NYSC without knowing anybody
- begged a Hausa Mai Shayi to pass a night in his wooden shop
- ended up spending 6 months in the Mai Shayi shop, with sleeping space created only after 1 am close of the shop daily
- bathed in makeshift semi-open bath shed all through
- a QS grad, went to NIQS head office, got a directory of QS firms in Nigeria, opened Abuja page, started calling the numbers one by one, pleading for job. Turned down by all but one
- one gave him an opportunity to come for a chat
- chat was with MD, a veteran
- given biro and paper to be tested in QS field
- the feedback? MD, an old-school perfectionist Yoruba baba, on top on his voice: “You don’t know anything. What is this?”
- young man almost entered ground
- when baba calmed down: “You don’t know anything, but you said you attended XYZ school abi? Do you know AB XY? He should be your mate?”
- “Yes sir, I know him from afar”
- “He is my son. Because you attended school with my son, I will try you on this job”
- Given the job, handed over to a senior employee to teach him the work like a primary school kid
- N60k pay per month
- still going to work from mai shayi shop
- left the mai shayi shop after a couple of months and got a N150k apartment, on which he emptied savings
- Went on to work in the firm for 6 years, with payrise over time, handling even big projects and becoming one of baba’s trusted guys
- by 6th year, young man, knowing the son of whom he was, and with side gigs in construction, and borrowing here and there, and with personal experience in construction, completed a 3 bedroom bungalow in an Abuja outskirt (actually Niger State). Moved in after just plastering.
All happened between 2016 and 2023
When he mentioned staying with mai shayi, I remembered my own beginning and betrayed my emotions.
There was me that landed in a brother’s BQ in VI Lagos after NYSC and staying there rent-free for one year, despite even getting decent job almost immediately after NYSC. I never thought of that as a big deal. But hearing the young man’s story, I thought: “What if this was me that had to live in Mai Shayi store for 6 months after NYSC? Could I have survived?”
I appreciate bro more.

You’re not a hypocrite for going to mosque because of Ramadan
You’re not a hypocrite for reading Quran because of Ramadan.
You’re not a hypocrite for dressing decently because of Ramadan
You’re not a hypocrites for being more religious in this Holy Month.
In fact, that’s the purpose of the month, to make us better than what we use to be.
May the blessings and goodness of this month be upon you and me.
While listening to this video, I started praying.
I hope you also listen and send a prayer ahead of you, the year is just starting, plenty months to still go.
The evening of October 2015, I was at church attending a youth program, it was some months after my NYSC, I was desperate to get a job so I was always walking about with my CV in my pocket😀
I saw a black G-wagon pulled over infront of the church and a woman in her 60’s
Energy drinks don’t give energy. They give the illusion of energy. Energy drinks are majorly filled with chemicals that work on the alert centers of the brain. Before we go into the matter in proper, let’s talk about some of the contents of energy drinks.
Most of them (energy drinks) contain high amounts of caffeine, higher than the recommended levels. Caffeine is a stimulant, it increases the circulation of chemicals such as adrenaline. Adrenaline is also known as “flight or fight hormone”. With adrenaline you are alert. Also cortisol which is a stress hormone is activated. (In small levels caffeine is good, in high levels; it is dangerous to the heart and health). Energy drinks are also loaded with sugar, and many other ingredients.
(Back to the matter) Energy drinks don’t give you energy. Energy comes from the mitochondria.
Mitochondria are membrane-bound cell organelles that generate most of the chemical energy needed to power your bodies biochemical reactions.
The chemical energy produced by the mitochondria is stored in a small molecule called adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP is also known as the energy currency of the body as it provides readily releasable energy. When you take energy drinks, they super-stimulate your brain to release adrenaline due to the high content of caffeine. Because you’re stimulated, you’re alert, there is rush of adrenaline, your heart is pumping. What it gave you is not energy, it’s an illusion of it, and it will die down and the circle repeats, and you keep harming your health by taking loads of it.

44mins I’ve been watching a Jamaican girl’s video edit of her trip to Lagos for Detty December with her Nigerian boyfriend.
As in, a whole week of doing EVERYTHING in Lagos. Not only Island but Mainland, suya on the street in Ikeja, LCC, fancy Lekki restaurants, nightclubs and “burlesque” shows, ice cream, beach houses by speedboat, natural fruit juices, traffic, spa, everything!
Then the boyfriend took her to a Jamaican restaurant to let her order food for them and speak with her natural accent. This guy’s the best boyfriend ever.
Anyway, my point is, Lagos State Tourism should license that video, edit it down to like 12mins and use it for their tourism campaign 😊
Luck plays a big role in our everyday life. That is why when we pray, we ask for favour. As long as the outcome depends on man, you need grace.
Years ago, somebody went for an interview. He complimented the interviewer that she smells nice and she took offence. That was how he lost the job. Someone else could have smiled and that would make the difference.
I know someone that went for a job interview and was asked three questions. He answered two but didn't know the last one. He responded with "I'll get back to you on that." The interviewers teased him with "abegii, you'll get back to me when, how?" Then she added "let it not be that I'm the one that failed you. There are many stages of this interview. You have passed this stage, you'll meet the higher-ups next. Good luck." That is luck. Religious people call it grace.
Somebody went for visa interview without his bank statement that people are always desperately filling up(even if they have to borrow) to show proof of fund. The consular officer asked him where it was and he said it was there. He pretended to look for it and feigned anger "it is supposed to be here. How could my assistant forget that? You know what? I could bring it to you later today or tomorrow morning." The consular officer who was looking at him told him not to worry and gave him the visa.
I went to Corporste Affairs Comission in 2019 and the lady that attended to me saw my hands and her eyes lit up. "Do you wash with those hands, do you do anything with those hands?" I didn't understand at first until she said they were pretty. That was all it took for someone looking angry and tired to attend to me nicely.
Some people have gone to places to seek favours, and the uniqueness of your name is interesting to the person. It could be that their child bears same name and conversation would switch from why you came to "You have a beautiful name. Do you even know what it means? My child bears the same name." Gist don start and whatever you came for, you'll get it.
Somebody went for the final stage of an interview, which was with the MD. Oga was watching ball and his team, Arsenal, were winning 5-0. The man was in a good mood and just asked him about football. He got the job. Imagine Arsenal were losing 4 - 0.
Some of you have given your CVs to your uncles and father's connect, but till tomorrow they have not gotten back to you. On Twitter here, somebody can just like your vibe and ask you to bring your CV. Then your own helper will be the one updating you on the progress of things.
During my Msc dissertation presentation, which was online, my laptop decided to go off. I took my cousin's laptop and logged in to my portal to continue. My supervisor was waiting. I apologised and she smiled and said "No worries." I could have logged in and she had disappeared for lunch and failed me for being unserious.
You could go out in Lagos wearing your University sweatshirt and somebody would wall up to you with "I schooled in Loughborough too. Pleasure to meet you. Why are you here?"
Sometimes, all it takes is your smile. It might even be your looks. Your disposition just put the person in a good mood and they are happy to help. Once it involves man, you need luck in life. You can't be too prepared for grace. It just happens.
