Speight Denies Truth and Reconciliation Talks
George Speight has denied reports that he plans to give evidence to the country’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), describing the claims as "completely unfounded".
The denial follows recent reports suggesting that the commission had successfully established contact with Speight.
A report stated that Speight had indicated he was willing to appear before the Commission to provide his account of the 2000 events.
However, in a statement issued by his family representative, Speight dismissed the official account as untrue.
"Speight confirms that he has not had any formal communications with the TRC," the statement said adding that: "He has made no commitments to appear before the TRC. “
The statement further stated that reports suggesting he had committed to appear "do not reflect the truth", calling on the media outlet to retract the claim and issue an apology.
It added that Speight wished the commission well in carrying out its mandate.
Comments are also being sought from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission was established to examine the impact of Fiji’s history of political instability.
