Yes we so need to have research based conversations about math fluency at our schools. When teachers know more, students can soar! All students can learn their facts!
Scaffolding reflection and self-checking helps students to do it well. Eventually, the scaffolds for checking can be faded out and students really have the skill to do it by themselves. Here is an example of a primary scaffolded self-check rubric.
My friend has never heard of ChatGPT. Showed her how I can have it wrote a story to illustrate a learning objective in seconds and then make image in @canva and make book in @BookCreatorApp

Far too many popular strategies for teaching reading are not actually supported by research. We sifted through to find the ones that are most effective.
When 9th grade students wrestled with math problems to find their own solutions before receiving instruction, their comprehension nearly doubled, compared to students learning via direct instruction only.

I would think about what types of strategies they are using. We want to meet students where they are and help them get to more sophisticated and efficient ways of thinking. Listening and then analyzing what they are doing is so important!
