Woke up this morning, saw hanatavirus trending, did some research and this is what I found...

· The Rescue Effort: On May 6, three people suspected of being infected were evacuated from the ship off the coast of Cape Verde. They are being transported to the Netherlands for medical care .
· Where the Ship is Headed: The MV Hondius is now sailing toward Tenerife in Spain's Canary Islands, expected to arrive in about three days. Passengers who are not Spanish nationals will be repatriated to their home countries from there .
· Monitoring Abroad: Health officials in the U.S., including in Georgia, Arizona, and California, are monitoring a few residents who were on the ship but have since returned home. So far, none of them have shown symptoms .

Hantavirus does not usually spread from person to person. However, the strain involved here is different.

Investigators currently believe the initial source of the virus was passengers who spent time in Argentina (where the Andes virus is found) before boarding. They likely then transmitted it to others on the ship .

For context, here’s a quick breakdown of what hantavirus is:

· What It Is: A rare but severe virus carried by certain rodents like mice and rats .
· How It Usually Spreads: Humans typically get infected by breathing in dust contaminated with rodent urine, droppings, or saliva .
· The Disease It Causes: In the Americas, the virus causes Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), which affects the lungs. Early symptoms (fever, muscle aches, fatigue) can quickly worsen into severe breathing difficulty .
· Incubation Period: Symptoms can appear anywhere from 1 to 8 weeks after exposure .

🔮 What to Expect Next

· Repatriation and Quarantine: Once the ship docks in the Canary Islands, plans are in place. For example, the 14 Spanish passengers will be taken to a military hospital in Madrid for quarantine .
· Risk Assessment Remains Low: The WHO's top epidemic expert has stressed that this is not the next COVID-19. The virus does not transmit easily, and the overall risk to the general public is considered very low .

DELETED, BUT NOT ERASED: RECOVERING MESSAGES FROM NOTIFICATION LOGS

The FBI was reportedly able to recover copies of incoming Signal messages from a suspect's iPhone even after the Signal application had been removed few months ago. This was achieved through forensic analysis of the device's push notification database, where portions of message content had been stored.

So I decided to use that same methodology and it worked.

Importantly, this is not a failure of Signal's end-to-end encryption. Rather, it highlights a well-known mobile forensics artifact issue.
iOS uses write-optimized storage, meaning deleted data may persist on a device until it is eventually overwritten.

When a message is delivered to an iPhone via Apple's Push Notification Service (APNs), iOS may generate and display a notification preview, depending on the device's notification settings. These previews can be temporarily stored within system-level databases and notification logs.

As a result, even if the messaging application is deleted, residual artifacts containing portions of message content may remain on the device. Some digital forensic tools can identify and recover these artifacts during an examination, providing investigators with valuable evidence that may no longer be accessible through the application itself.

The underlying issue is that the iPhone caches items that appear as notifications on your lock screen.
I hope Apple will limit the time that messages are cached to minimize risk to users.

Turn off or disable notifications for secure messaging apps or other apps you think are sensitive.
