With 83% of respondents thinking teachers should be doing the chunking over children doing the chunking themselves, it is time for some answers.

Miller wrote a paper in 1956 titled:"The Magical Number Seven, Plus or Minus Two: Some Limits on Our Capacity for Processing Information"

In this paper, Miller observed that the average person can only hold about seven (plus or minus two) "chunks" of information in their short-term memory at any given time. The key insight he provided was the concept of "chunking," which refers to the process of organizing individual pieces of information into larger, more meaningful units. By doing so, we can effectively expand the capacity of our short-term memory. We recall 0800 255 355 876 quite readily because we, the learner, use a chunking method to convert the numbers into four easily remembered chunks.

While chunking information can aid memory (Miller, 1956), simply presenting pre-chunked material to children has limitations. A primary concern is the redundancy effect: for students who are already domain experts, pre-chunked material can be redundant, hindering rather than helping learning (Sweller, 1988). Critically, the goal should be to empower students to develop their own chunking strategies, fostering metacognition and transferable learning skills, rather than passively receiving pre-digested content (Dunlosky et al., 2013). Furthermore, in mixed-attainment classrooms, uniformly chunking material for all students may inadvertently disadvantage higher-attaining learners, who benefit more from grappling with complex information and forming their own internal connections and chunks.

So whilst chidren will always chunk for themselves, chunking information for children needs care and caution.
