I went to the store, I heard the cashier next to mine ask the customer, “WOULD you be interested in donating to XYZ?”

The customer hit her with the detached answer, “Meh, not this time.”

So when I reached my cashier, he asked me, “CAN you donate to XYZ?”

My first thought was, well, I CAN; there’s no reason I couldn���t.

So when I told him NO, there was a stronger emotional hurdle to overcome.
The difference is slight but significant.
