Did you ever play HeroQuest? This was one of my favorite board games growing up!

My Dad collects board games and I reminisced on some of my favorites while visiting him for Thanksgiving, including HeroQuest!

In 1989 Milton Bradley, working with Games Workshop, published HeroQuest. Inspired by role playing games, one player is the “GameMaster” Zargon who presents the objective and lays out tiles, traps, monsters, doors, and furniture as the other players navigate a dungeon to complete various objectives.

Players may choose from four heroes ("Barbarian", "Dwarf", "Elf" and "Wizard") to fight Goblins, Orcs, Undead, a Gargoyle, and more. The Barbarian gets to roll more attack dice, the Wizard has elemental and healing spells, and the Elf may use 1 of the Wizard’s 4 spell sets if they play together. Players may attack, cast a spell, and search for traps, doors, and treasure.

I loved this game! My Dad has 3 copies, and we found them at thrift stores in the 90s for less than $3! My Dad played as Zargon and I would usually play as a couple of the characters myself. I have my own copies as well and have played a few dungeons over the last couple years! The game was re-released in 2021 and has an app to act as Zargon now!

On a side note, I’m sometimes asked how I kept all my games. Because my Dad is a board game collector, he always encouraged me to keep my video games and toys. I’m so thankful he instilled that preservation mindset in me!

Sharing a small fraction of his monstrous collection here (he has 3700 games, including many of TSR’s pre-D&D strategy war games)! Needless to say, between my video games and his board games, I’ve played a lot of games in my life!
