🟠 JIM CHALMERS NEVER HAD TO WRITE THE WORD DEATH. HIS NEW TAX IS TRIGGERED BY A CHANGE OF OWNERSHIP, AND DYING CHANGES THE OWNERSHIP 🟠

From 1 July 2027, Treasurer Jim Chalmers' capital gains law freezes a tax bill on every asset you own, worked out on 30 June 2027 whether you sell or not. It falls due at what the Act calls a "realisation event", and that means any change of ownership, not just a sale.

Dying transfers ownership. So does a divorce settlement. The Act never says whether either sets the bill off, because across all 73 pages it never mentions death, deceased estates or divorce.

Chalmers scrapped one measure critics called a death tax on 18 June. The package was law 8 days later with this one still in it.
