FQ: My biggest take away is there are so many ways to facilitate discussion; I shouldn’t pigeon hole myself or my students to one way or set of questions just because they respond well to it. I should try other question stems and strategies to push my students. #NNPSChat
A4: I’m more of a “get down to business guy.” I should make time for more icebreakers to build students comfort with synchronous discussion. I should also have students self-assess their online participation, so they can reflect on their engagement. #NNPSChat
A3: When I ask students to agree/disagree with a statement or compare/contrast a topic, my students open up. I appreciate the other strategies this module provided, and will def. incorporate them. #NNPSChat
My class practiced speaking when called on and not interrupting others. It’s about manners and respect. Even if you disagree with a peer, you can disrespect in a way that shows a mutual respect. #NNPSChat
A1: One way I incorporate synchronous discussion is with our read aloud each day. Another way I do this is by having students share different ways they reached an answer in math and which way works best for them. #NNPSChat
A5 – I have students show their work on the screen, so I can see their work if it is something we are doing live. I will also tell students to send me their answers in the chat. Also, if cameras are on, a lot can be said about body language and facial expressions! #NNPSChat
A4 – Full disclosure, I somewhat struggling with this virtually. I mean, I do small group and scaffold for students, but other forms of differentiation have been difficult. I’m looking forward to new tools in my toolbox, like choice boards, etc.!#NNPSChat
A3 – Student agency can be built by developing a strong positive rapport with kids, clear expectations for learning, and multiple modalities to show evidence of learning. Today the campus group discussed learning styles and incorporating that into our online classrooms. #NNPSChat
A2 – To me, student agency means students have “buy in” to their learning. It gives them say on what and/or how they learn. Student agency matters because it can motivate students to go above and beyond their normal performance level. #NNPSChat
A1 – I have to take into account possible connection issues. Also, more “quick checks” to make sure students are with me. I also try to get the kids up and moving more, rather than sitting and being sedentary. #NNPSChat
@teacher_kinney @HART_EdTech Yes! I did have one student express that is being able to see his screen is kind of creepy. Welcome to virtual school buddy!
