When you deposit money in a bank, the bank automatically becomes your debtor, while you are the creditor.

In simple terms, you have given the bank a low interest loan. The money is no longer sitting with you. It is money the bank now owes you.

This is why depositing or withdrawing money is called a contra entry in accounting.

When you deposit cash,
Cash in hand decreases
Bank balance increases

When you withdraw,
Bank balance decreases
Cash in hand increases

In both cases, you are only moving money between your own cash and your claim on the bank. No third party is involved.

Your wealth does not change. Only where the money sits.
