There is an ancient Sumerian story where one god creates a living creature for the specific purpose of taking down another god.
The text is called Ninurta and the Turtle.
Ninurta was a powerful warrior god who had defeated the Anzud bird, a creature associated with the theft of the Tablet of Destinies.
Following his victory, Ninurta was honoured by Enki, but apparently the rewards weren't enough.
Ninurta began contemplating taking power for himself.
The text actually says he set his sights on the entire world.
Enki knew what he was planning.
So Enki, operating from the Abzu, the subterranean freshwater domain beneath the earth, fashioned a turtle from clay.
He created this thing specifically to stop Ninurta.Enki stationed it at an entrance to the Abzu and deliberately lured Ninurta into position.
The creature grabbed Ninurta by a tendon from behind. Enki then made it dig a pit, dragging the warrior god down with it.
Ninurta couldn't escape. The turtle continued attacking his feet while he struggled.
Enki stood over him and mocked him."Where has your strength fled? Where is your heroism?"
Think about what the Sumerians are describing.
One god discovers that another is becoming a threat. Rather than confront him directly, he manufactures a creature from material found within his own domain, places it at a strategic entrance and uses it to incapacitate a considerably stronger opponent.
And this was Ninurta.
A god who had defeated some of the most terrifying beings in Mesopotamian mythology.
Yet this little thing created by Enki brought him down.
I find the details fascinating because the creature wasn't simply summoned. The text specifically describes Enki fashioning it from the clay of the Abzu.Create the organism. Position it. Lure the target. Neutralize the threat.
It's difficult to read this without thinking about the modern concept of engineering biological systems for specific purposes.
I'm not suggesting the Sumerians understood genetic engineering.
The text doesn't establish that.
But thousands of years ago, somebody preserved a story about a powerful being operating from a subterranean freshwater domain, manufacturing a living creature to solve a military problem.

I am convinced that most of the population is under a spell cast by dark forces, and that only a small number of people can see through the schemes and tactics of the enemy.
Why some are immune to it is something I still do not understand.
