Uncle Sam became a unifying symbol of national identity and spirit after an iconic 1917 poster transformed his image.
But he was also a real person: Sam Wilson, a businessman in Troy, New York, who supplied beef and pork to troops during the War of 1812. This is the story of how he became an enduring national symbol: "He is America. He is American history."
Congrats to @JeremiyahLove on being a Heisman finalist. My son Andrew and I had the good fortune of meeting him and his family a few weeks ago. #GoIrish

APUSH students interacted with a number of documents from Thomas Jefferson this past week. One was a letter to famed Canandaigua resident Gideon Granger. I challenged students to see if they could find his grave in Woodlawn Cemetery, here are some that accepted the challenge.
On this date, Susan B. Anthony votes illegally in the 1872 Presidential election in Rochester, NY. She is later put on trial right here in Canandaigua.
Today, National Council for the Social Studies remembers the innocent lives lost and the brave first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice to save others.

My grandpa, Lt. Victor Palumbo crossed the Ludendorff Bridge on March 9th, 2 days after it was captured intact, as the leader of a Company of 5 tanks from the 786th Tank Battalion. He visited the remains of the bridge in 1999 and wrote this reflection.
