Why does the California Department of Public Health think only English-speaking workers deserve knowledge about their legal protections?

So the only people who will be able to use vouchers are the people who can already afford private schools. The best private school near me is more than $32,000 per year.

@suddenlysobbing I worked as an election clerk at a polling place yesterday in Texas. MANY people were turned away because they weren’t properly registered. Some were registered in other states, but not here. Some were registered in other counties but lived here, but that matters. Low turnout too

I can’t think about Joe Biden without tearing up a little.

This man ran for president 5 times and lost then enthusiastically backed Obama and played the establishment number two to the greatest leader of his generation.

He wanted to run for president in 2016 but couldn’t because his son Beau died and he was too wracked with grief.

So he comes back in 2020, saves the country from Donald Trump and despite being a career centrist, proceeds to have the most pro-union, pro-working class administration in 80 years, pulls the country out of Covid, pulls us from the economic disaster of Trump into the best economy in the world.

He’s then betrayed by the media class and has to drop out because he’s too old for them. He steps down, for the good of the country, and immediately turns around and full-throatedly endorses the the first Black woman Presidential candidate finalist in U.S. history.

This man.

Whenever I talk about high control strategies at school, I’m told that they are necessary because teenagers can’t be trusted. They aren’t going to the toilet to pee, they’re going to vape. If they could talk to each other in the corridors they would be shoving. If they didn’t have hours of homework they’d waste their evenings. Even praying is an act of insubordination rather than worship, when done by a teenager.

Of course, goes the logic, their every move needs to be controlled. The only alternative is chaos.

This sets extremely low expectations for young people. It says, we trust you so little that we won’t allow you to make any decisions at all. If we did allow you to make decisions, everything would go wrong. You’d do it badly. Chaos, in fact.

How does this fit with creating a culture of ‘high expectations’, often talked about in schools? How can we have high expectations of teenagers whilst showing them that they aren’t trusted to walk down a corridor? What exactly do those ‘high expectations’ mean - are they really just expectations of compliance?

For high expectations aren’t just about what we say. They are in the air that we breathe, the atmosphere which young people live in. If the culture of a school says ‘teenagers aren’t trustworthy’ then real expectations are rock bottom. No matter how many signs are on the wall exhorting them to aim for the stars.

It should be no surprise when young people live down to that expectation. They’ve learnt their lesson well.
