A fantastic volunteering opportunity available at @TheHiveWorcs for young adults aged 13-24 📚 Make a difference and become a hero for young readers this summer…
Worcestershire Libraries are looking for enthusiastic young people to volunteer during the Summer Reading Challenge. If you are passionate about books and enjoy working with children, this is a fantastic opportunity to share your love of reading while gaining valuable skills and experience.
As a volunteer, you will:
- Inspire children to read and complete the challenge
- Support library activities and events
- Receive training and guidance from library staff
- Build confidence and make new friends
Volunteering is fun, rewarding, and can count towards schemes like the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, so if you are taking part in @DofE then this may be something for you! In 2024, 149 young volunteers gave over 2,000 hours of their time to support the challenge, some even used their experience towards their D of E accreditation!
For context, the Summer Reading Challenge is a national initiative led by @readingagency which inspires children aged 4-11 to continue reading during the summer holidays. Research has found that children’s reading ability can drop considerably during this time away from school which of course has a negative impact on their learning when they return in September. Children are invited to join up at their local library and read 6 books across the summer to complete the challenge. Each time they finish a story we ask that they return to their library to tell us about the book and get a sticker. This is where the volunteers come in!
The Hive are recruiting young adults who are friendly and enthusiastic about reading to join us for regular sessions over the summer to listen to children talking about their books. Their role will be to motivate children and help them find their next great read!
This is a great opportunity to gain work experience in a relaxed but professional environment, as a confidence boost or to use on job and further education applications. The Hive are happy to provide references for volunteers when they complete their sessions.
If you are interested then please follow this link to the Worcestershire Libraries website and scroll down to find the online application form, Summer Reading Challenge | Worcestershire County Council. Alternatively, you can pop in to The Hive to have a chat with a Team Leader.

@m_chiles Love this idea! We meet face to face with key pupils and hold a transition evening so our new pupils can meet their new form tutor . But love this idea as well. Do you run it like a parents evening?

We had 200 students warming up in the hall pre-GCSE on Friday morning. Great buzz in the room. If you want to use my breakfast resources for the next two papers, or my calculator revision mats (which we’re using in lessons next week), it’s all linked here: https://t.co/eGl0yJ4cEL

I have just added the GCSE 2022 page to the website https://t.co/AsciP3C9XP There are a variety of revision checklists, practice papers, YouTube playlists etc. I hope they are useful and I will be working hard to add anything labelled "coming soon" as quickly as I can 😃
