Analysis: What’s really happening in Baghdad right now.
Iraqi PM Ali al-Zaidi just escalated his anti-corruption drive with a major overnight operation. Elite Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS) units which report directly to the PM sealed Baghdad’s Green Zone, deployed armored vehicles, and carried out raids resulting in arrests of multiple MPs and officials.
Names circulating include Bahaa al-Nouri, Ziad al-Janabi, Muthanna al-Samarrai, Alaa Sukkar, Hassan al-Khafaji, Abdul Karim & Abbas al-Sudani, Mohammed al-Karbouli, and others on judicial warrants for financial/administrative corruption.
This is not a coup.
It’s a high-profile security operation using elite forces to hit senior figures inside the most protected area of the capital. Mainstream reporting (AFP, Shafaq, etc.) frames it as part of al-Zaidi’s ongoing graft crackdown since he took office in May not a military overthrow.
Context matters:
1, Al-Zaidi is Iraq’s youngest PM (businessman background), nominated by the Shia Coordination Framework but with clear U.S. blessing. He has already moved against corruption networks and signaled intent to bring armed factions under state control.
2, Iraq’s corruption is systemic and devastating — billions siphoned from oil revenues while the country faces economic strain.
3, Using the CTS (Iraq’s most professional and PM-loyal force) bypasses regular police and shows he’s serious about asserting central authority.
The “US-backed coup to purge Iran allies” narrative spreading on social media is overhyped. No credible evidence of clashes with the 4th Regiment or regime-change intent. It’s classic sensational framing. Some targets may have Iran ties (common in Iraqi politics), but the stated basis is corruption — a charge that hits across factions.
What this signals:
1, Al-Zaidi is testing (and expanding) his power early in his term.
2, Potential to build public legitimacy if perceived as even-handed.
3, Risk of backlash from targeted networks or militias.
4, Part of the larger U.S.-Iran tug-of-war in Iraq, but executed through Iraqi institutions.
This is a bold (and risky) move by a new PM trying to clean house and strengthen the state. Whether it’s genuine reform or selective power play remains to be seen watch which names stick and whether more senior figures fall.

@RepThomasMassie There is nothing wrong with glyphosate. Ask a farmer, its an amazing product. It breaks down rapidly in water + soil. Have you considered for one moment that you are being lied to re Roundup? Have you looked at the chemistry? Do your homework! Everything isnt a bloody conspiracy
@HealthRanger In the Bible read about how Abraham ties up his own son + prepares to sacrifice him. Abraham gets servant Hagar pregnant + dumps her in desert with his son because wife Sara wanted Hagar + son dead. Not Holy people. Satan’s chosen. Mary mother of Jesus is also related to Abraham
@ShadowofEzra Jesus is resurrected not “dead”. Jesus Followers cant be antisemite because Christians follow a semite - son of Mary - related to Abraham - father of Jews + Christians+ moslems. same Abraham who got his slave Hagar pregnant + dumped her + baby in desert to die. immoral FFS
@ABridgen You cant opt out of NHS data sharing - the opt out process is a big lie. Try objecting to your data being shared with palantir etc and NHS data controller will refuse your right to consent.
@TheProjectUnity TL;DR Here's his motive right here.
He's a high level Freemason and they've been allowed to run roughshod through the Vatican since 1958.
@NoContextBrits dish scrubber on long-handled stick is more effective than norm sponge because torque = force × distance. Hand is farther from scrubbing head, same arm push creates more downward pressure/scrubbing power. Mechanical advantage. Better angles + control + momentum + higher pressure
In Spain Jose Luis Abalos Former Transport Minister was sentenced to 24 years in prison for corruption relating to Covid mask procurement contracts.
There will be many UK politicians worried about any investigation into PPE contracts and the fraud of Track and Trace’ .
@SamaHoole Meanwhile we cant easily buy wool socks anywhere, knitting ‘wool’ is acrylic, and woolly jumpers and fleeces nowhere to be found - people wearing recycled poly fleece. Look at your clothes label. Bring back woollen socks, fleece and jumpers
@ricwe123 No. They could have shaken hands. In Western culture these gestures are important. When playground bullies use hurty words, you ignore them. Disappointing to see Iran is losing moral high ground. They would see the World starve just to prove a point. Pathetic
@HealthRanger Much like Biden - there is an actor ( de niro) playing the part of Trump in a mask. You can tell because the hand gestures are OTT, the messages too long, without typos, and sound like AI wrote them.
