Death Be Not Proud.
Today, you have touched the very core of Africaโs creative nerve.
Before it was en vogue to be proudly African, Maria was already carrying the flag with grace, conviction and unapologetic pride.
Before African stories found global stages, she was the trusted communicator to shape our narratives with dignity and depth.
Before the creative community gathered in fashionable spaces and celebrated itself with confidence, she was the convenor who brought people together, opening doors, connecting generations and reminding us that creativity is also community.
Everyone has a memorable Maria story or anecdote: Their first pair of proudly African shoes, bag or accessory. Their story authentically told. A door she opened for them. A hug, smile or good word that made their day.
Everyone has an indelible memory of her character:
Selfless.
Connector.
Community Builder.
Cultural Shaper.
Generous.
Kind.
A quiet but formidable force who made others feel seen long before the world saw them.
Maria did not simply work in the creative industry; she helped give it soul, language and belonging. So many careers, collaborations, friendships and movements across the continent carry her fingerprints.
And perhaps that is why this loss feels so profound. It is not only the passing of a person, but of a presence that was warm, generous, elegant and deeply African.
But as the poet reminds us in Death Be Not Proud:
โDeath, thou shalt die.โ
Because spirits like Maria's do not disappear.
They echo in the stories we tell, the communities we build, and the Africa she believed in before many of us knew how to believe in it ourselves.
Rest well, Maria McCloy. Africa is better because you passed through it.
Thank you for gift of life and contributions to the African creative community.
With your passing, this is not a Happy Africa Month.
