Part 2. Every time you remember your childhood, you’re really remembering the last time you remembered your childhood. And the time before that. And the time before that.
In 2000, a neuroscientist at NYU named Karim Nader proved something nobody had believed possible. Memory doesn’t sit still. Every time you call a memory up, your brain unlocks it for about four to six hours, lets new context in, and saves the rewritten version over the old one. The original is gone.
This means the memories you have most often are also the most rewritten. The story you’ve told yourself about your childhood a hundred times has been edited a hundred times. That painful moment you keep replaying. Quietly reshaped, each time. What you’re remembering now is your most recent retelling.
It also means therapists have been using this mechanism for decades without a name for it. Talk therapy and exposure therapy work because they bring a painful memory back into the open while it’s still editable, then close it up with new context attached. The memory stays. The grip on you loosens.
Now layer this onto Part 1. If suppression blocked the original moment from being saved, and recall keeps rewriting whatever did make it through, then the life you remember has been quietly authored by a person who spent years trying very hard not to feel anything.
Some of it can come back. The hippocampus, the part of the brain that takes the worst hit from chronic suppression, is also one of the only regions in the body that can grow new cells your entire life. A 2011 study at the University of Pittsburgh put 120 older adults on a year of regular walking, forty minutes a day, three days a week. Their hippocampus grew about 2 percent. The control group’s hippocampus shrank 1.4 percent over the same year. That 2 percent is the equivalent of reversing one to two years of age-related decline, just from walking.
Other things that regrow it: learning a new skill, deep sleep, meditation, time outdoors. London cab drivers who spend years memorizing the city’s 25,000 streets have measurably bigger hippocampi than the rest of us.
The part of you that saves your life can repair itself. The memories you do have can be opened and edited toward something kinder.
