The perception of IQ as a seemingly objective measure of intelligence is frequently used to promote racist pseudoscience on social media.
For this reason, I think it's extremely important for people to know some relevant facts about IQ:
"High school should be creating a diamond but instead its crushing my child into powder"
This is what a parent recently told me in regards to her son and his experience in high school
She told me she knows he’s going to do well in the work force because he’s intelligent and skilled but not in the way that school requires it
She said school represents one kind of intelligence and doesn't value any other types
"Its torture for him but he has to make it through. This doesn’t seem like its good for a child’s soul or spirit."
She's not the first parent to tell me this nor will she be last
The kids and teens NEED us to do better than this
@TeachLeadRepeat#Ungrading for me is not the complete absence of grades, because as you alluded, it’s just not possible.
Rather, it’s a pedagogical pursuit that aims to center student-agency and remove obsessive barriers of point-collecting and grade-reporting.
it would be pretty nice if we stopped making students feel like if we don’t get straight 90s and take all the hardest courses we wont get anywhere in life. #onted
The pull to focus on deficits and loss in schools is stronger than ever. This is a dangerous trap if working toward equity is our goal. Resist this and lean heavily into imagination and the opportunity this moment presents. The best learning is based on what’s possible not fear.
Let’s stop asking those who have been & continue to be oppressed to educate others & “make it better.” If an assignment upholds Settler Colonialism, NO student should be doing it. We have the ability & responsibility to create learning that affirms all members of our community.
Working toward equity is not about understanding student needs by finding deficits, rationalizing what they can’t do and lowering expectations. It’s work to understand students unique gifts/talents and entry points so we can RAISE EXPECTATIONS.
Does your assessment align with your beliefs about students and learning? “We ARE testing what we value, but not what we SAY we value!” - Laquita Louie #DWFA2022
"It is not about lack of accountability. It’s about differentiating the way we do things for students who the system was DESIGNED to push out." Thank you @jeewanc & @camillelogan for guiding our understanding of #inclusivedesign as a way of thinking and an approach to leadership.
@JBradshaw01 The main reason I will wear my n95 is to model to the students that it's okay to wear a mask. I feel like not wearing one would put pressure on students to take theirs off. We have no idea what the health situations are with our students (and their families).
@SarahRileyCase Congratulations! @Concordia students are unbelievably lucky to have you, Mel! Wishing your fam the best in Montreal. Your impact here @PeelSchools will not be forgotten. #TransformationalEducator
@hctowns@CPerentesis Thanks for sharing your reflections! When we promote multiple strategies, we increase access to the learning. Almost all students can go from the concrete strategies in your 2P class to the algebraic ones in 2D, but honour both. That’s actualizing high expectations.
A little thing making a big difference for me right now is that I have been putting this question at the beginning of assignments:
"What's a piece of feedback you've received that you should keep in mind as you start this?"
It helps bridge the gap between feedback and growth.
