My sons went by shortened versions of their first names at school, even though I never call them that, because they prefer it. One doesn’t like how non-French-speaking people try to say his name, so he also uses an anglicized version of the name. No one asked me permission 1/

I agree with this idea 1000%. But I’ll add it’s also not always about a transphobic home. Some kids, no matter how safe and loving the home, just feel better testing these waters at school or with friends. And they should have every right to do so.

@sopkowe I say this all the time. I usually wear a rainbow shirt to school every Friday when I’m subbing. The students at my regular school comment on it. But if it helps one person to feel comfortable or realize I am a safe person/ally then I don’t mind being the rainbow lady.
