Happy birthday to Larry Graham, born on this day in 1946 — the man who revolutionized the bass guitar.

As a member of Sly & The Family Stone, he pioneered the slap bass technique, turning the instrument into a percussive, funk-driving force.

Later, with Graham Central Station, he brought that deep pocket and infectious groove to hits like “Can You Handle It” and “Hair.”

His influence can be heard in funk, R&B, rock, and hip-hop — basically anywhere the bass makes you move.
