Summer Ss have been working on activities based on "Quit Calling Me a Monster!" By Jory John. They created a monster out of clay, added a thought bubble to show what they are thinking and explained how we could be a good classmate to each monster if they were in our class.
After reading variations on the Humpty Dumpty story, students worked on building a safety suit for Humpty Dumpty. We'll be testing their efficacy after spring break!
As we finish TKAMB and THUG, we ask, "what would justice look like in the case of Tom Robinson and Khalil Harris?" Ss look at Truth & Reconciliation Commissions, Pardons, Formal Apologies, Reparations, Memorials and Moments and reflect on what is justice in these instances.

For the 4th consecutive year, the White House has eliminated the @US_IMLS from the proposed FY21 federal budget. Urge Congress to #FundLibraries:

Love this video explaining what has been one of these most effective SEL lessons I've ever taught. It makes sense to kids, it makes sense to adults, and now it's even easier to share! Thanks always for the excellent stuff you put in the world @cultureodignity.
We’ve all felt we deserve respect and not been given it or been told to show respect to someone we don’t actually respect because of how they behave.
Dignity gives us a new way to interact. A way where we can recognize the person’s essential worth apart from their actions.
Ss listened to American Elegy by Frank Ticheli, read program and performance notes, and participated in Chalk Talk discussion. Some of their reflections made my heart hurt.
Session Two of @cultureodignity Owning Up Curriculum involves figuring out what behaviors go in the "Act Like a Girl" and "Act Like a Boy" box. Ss respond to the Q: What is one thing you can do to make the "boxes" less powerful?
Looking at excerpts of "West Virginia State Board of Education vs. Barnett" (1943) and deciding: which justice is the textualist, the one who wrote the majority opinion or the dissent?
Establishing norms on Day 1 of our @cultureodignity Owning Up Curriculum. The "Dignity vs. Respect" mini-lessons is one of my favorite things I teach all year.
It's crunch time in the classroom coffee shop! Ss "ordered" (decaf) coffee, tea, or hot chocolate and spent the day before their first big cumulative exam sipping and studying. I make a great barista!
We ended our Haunting of Sunshine Girl book club with an Escape Room. No standards or curricular goals-- just for fun! It's important for schools to hold space for reading for the joy of it.
There was a big crowd at today’s #climatestrike at the Capitol. We’re so proud to stand with Grace Academy students and Hartford youth leading the fight on climate change. #GlobalClimateStrike
Today I was "grilled" by a group of 7th graders at @GCSchoolsNC Allen MS on: (1)size of lockers commensurate to size of backpacks; (2) lack of teaching/materials on different cultures; (3)infrequency of fettuccini on lunch menu. This very smart, brave scholar was the ring leader!
Two young men broke into the School Resource Officer’s office at a Tennessee high school and stole an AR-15 and a tactical vest. This is a logical outcome of allowing guns in schools.

This whole thread is important professional development for anyone who has the tremendous privilege and responsibility of putting books in kiddos' hands.
