The latest report from Statistics Canada on uptake of the Disability Tax Credit (DTC) confirms that the percentage of people with disabilities who are approved for the DTC is shockingly low – just 15.6%.

There are lots of reasons for the low uptake – the complex application form and other barriers to approval, as well as a feeling that for people living on low incomes who may not owe taxes, a tax credit just isn’t worth it.

However, the DTC is a crucial gateway benefit for other government programs such as the Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP) and the upcoming Canada Disability Benefit (CDB). Not being approved for the DTC can mean missing out on funds and supports you are entitled to.
