When we study the educational experiences that the wealthy want for their children; choice, creativity, autonomy..
When we study the experiences that are often mandated for marginalized youth; sit still, walk in a line, don't talk.
We can question & interrupt this. We must.❤️
Preview of @eveewing’s forthcoming book on school closings: “Parents and community members also weren’t pleased at the insistent focus on numbers, as if schools were only machines meant to pump out results.” https://t.co/3ug0dOspmK
i spent months crunching data and talking to principals, teachers and parents — all to better understand the relationship between gentrification and CPS in logan square. here's the result: https://t.co/uyKhrgUlya @BlockClubCHI
Please stop rewarding good attendance in schools. It’s great for those with good health but discriminating and demoralising for those who haven’t. My 12 year old who takes daily chemotherapy for leukaemia has 83% attendance this year. I am proud. He thinks his school isn’t.
There are great things happening in many CPS scls. Bravo to @maera_me for winning a Teaching Tolerance 2018 award for her work "teaching students to recognize and fight systemic inequality." tx @D_Stieber https://t.co/ljgxC1UxHn
This weekend I sorted through some papers my mom saved from my childhood. The top one is my 4th grade self evaluation. The bottom, my 4th grade state test score. Random House published my 6th book last week. #MoreThanATest
We have to reduce the police presence, transform the school culture & restore transformative conditions for young people #CrystalLaura#solutions#SEW2018
#Janus was announced today. It was not a good decision. Read and share this article from @BobPMilw@RethinkSchools for some strategies about how we can fight back: https://t.co/AFbVAxksla https://t.co/R9E1oJg3ld
@ILRaiseYourHand Bad idea. Prospect education will devolve 2 checklists, not true mastery, instruction w/b delivered by untested, unproven computer programs that may capture&sell student data. Who in CPS is trained and qualified 2 “rate” SE “competency” & w/whom will info be shared?Who controls?
Requiring students to take state test (SAT) in order to be promoted to 12th grade (did they hear about U of C dropping req to submit ACT/SAT scores last week? https://t.co/RNIksf8vBn)
List of schools participating in the #competencybasedEd pilot program and diplomas that will transfer to post secondary education. @MatherOCCS #cpsboard
