Yesterday, I had the immense honour of receiving the Stephen Denyer Award for Best Contribution by an Individual at the LawWorks Pro Bono Awards 2025.
Stephen Denyer was a brilliant lawyer, a connector of people, and a global ambassador for our profession. His wisdom, generosity, and leadership shaped countless careers. Receiving the award from his daughter, and meeting his children, made the moment deeply personal. As a father to a five-year-old myself, it was profoundly moving.
A huge thank you to LawWorks for the incredible work you do, truly inspiring. To all the nominees, there are no winners here; every single one of you is making an extraordinary contribution to society and our profession. Your commitment to pro bono work is invaluable.
Pro bono work has shown me that the law is not just a profession, it is a tool for change. Every case, every story, every person I have met has left an imprint on my heart:
•Survivors of domestic violence arriving in tears.
•People trapped in immigration limbo for years, sometimes decades.
•Families pushed into destitution, with children left hungry because systems failed them.
I will never forget the young mother who arrived at my office, exhausted, fearful, and in tears. She had carried years of hardship silently, yet found the courage to reach out. That day, I realised the law is not just about winning cases, it is about showing up when someone’s life hangs in the balance.
Through these experiences, I discovered the true meaning of purpose: standing beside someone when they feel invisible, helping them reclaim their dignity, and witnessing the courage of people who refuse to give up. These are not just cases, they are human lives. They remind us that justice is urgent, personal, and transformative.
I didn’t start my career in law, I began in corporate banking, surrounded by numbers, targets, and deadlines. But I wanted my work to matter, to see lives change, and to connect with people in a meaningful way.
To all young people and recent graduates: step forward. Take that first pro bono case. Use your skills, energy, and passion to stand with those who need it most. It may feel daunting, overwhelming even, but the impact you can make is enormous. The lessons you will learn, the gratitude you will witness, and the growth you will experience, as a lawyer and as a person, cannot be measured.
Practical ways to get involved include contacting or visiting your local Citizens Advice Bureau, law centres, LawWorks, university legal clinics, Advocate, The National Pro Bono Centre and others. Every action, every case, every connection matters, each step you take can make a real difference.
Pro bono work will teach you resilience, empathy, and courage. It shows the law is more than rules; it is a lifeline, a voice, and a shield for those who have none.
Stand with those who cannot stand alone, and in doing so, you will not only change their lives, but your own. #ProBono #LawWorks #LegalCommunity #MakingADifference #JusticeForAll @MTC_Solicitors@TheLawSociety
Our @SinnKandiah has once again been recognised by @ChambersGuides 2026 as a #DEIChampion 🌟

After almost four decades in the UK, my client George has finally been granted Leave to Remain through our pro bono representation, from his fresh application to the Tribunal.
His long struggle highlights the devastating consequences of previous poor legal representation, repeated Home Office errors, and the failure to recognise that he arrived before Nigerian visa requirements were introduced. Decades of uncertainty and unjust challenges to his credibility have now come to an end.
George’s victory is a powerful reminder of the importance of ethical, client-focused legal representation and the vital role of pro bono work in ensuring justice for those who are marginalised or excluded, no matter their origin or the color of their skin.

Our 82-year-old client has finally been granted UK settlement after 50+ years of separation from her British-born children caused by rigid immigration rules.
She lost ILR after a short trip to Nigeria. @MTC_Solicitors #HostileEnvironment https://t.co/TIjcxR3OJT
My client, a British citizen, is forced to live apart from her disabled husband after the Home Office refused a lawful English test exemption. Now the #ImmigrationWhitePaper plans to make it even harder.

I’m truly grateful to be recognised once again on the 2025 Pro Bono Recognition List for England & Wales. Congratulations to the 4,780 barristers and solicitors honoured for their unwavering dedication to improving access to justice by selflessly giving their time and expertise to those who need it most.
Pro bono work is more than just legal service—it’s about standing with those who need support, building trust, and contributing to a fairer, more #compassionate society. It’s a privilege to assist #grassroots communities who might otherwise lack access to legal help.
Proud to be part of a profession that is committed to justice for all, and excited to continue this meaningful aspect of my practice. @MTC_Solicitors@TheLawSociety@Law_Works@ProBonoCentre

After nearly 20 living years in #limbo, our client’s life changed in 2023 when she met Our @SinnKandiah HO granted her LTR.
“He doesn’t wear a suit, and I thought, that is my kind of person.”
Sometimes, it’s the personal touch that makes all the difference. #StLucia
Refugee status granted to client and his partner following successful second appeal to First-tier Tribunal. The Tribunal accepted our submission that LGBT+ persons can face persecution in Sri Lanka, based on new evidence post-dating the country guidance in LH and IP (gay men: risk) Sri Lanka CG [2015] 00073. The Tribunal accepted that there was a real risk of our clients facing persecution if returned. Our clients were previously unsuccessful in their appeal in 2016 but this outcome followed further submissions made to the Home Office in 2020, relying on updated country evidence. The HO application for permission to appeal was refused and they have now implemented the decision. Excellent advocacy by @KimRenfrew

‼️The government is postponing the shift to #eVisas. Until March 2025, people will be allowed to travel to the UK on expired documents (BRPs & BRCs).
While we welcome this eleventh hour reprieve, there's still a lot to be done to avoid travel chaos.🧵
