🏃‍♂️ START TIMES, START GROUPS & CUT-OFFS ANNOUNCED FOR THE 99TH COMRADES MARATHON

The Comrades Marathon Association is introducing exciting operational enhancements for the 2026 Up Run to make your journey from Durban to Pietermaritzburg safer, smoother and an even better runner experience.

🕒 Earlier Three-Group Start
To maximise daylight running conditions and improve safety, the 2026 race will feature an earlier staggered start:
Group 1: 05h00
Group 2: 05h15
Group 3: 05h30

👟 Why Three Start Groups?
Following the success of the staggered start in 2025, the CMA is expanding to three controlled starts in 2026 to improve runner flow and safety across the route.

✅ Reduced congestion at the start
✅ Better flow through narrow route sections
✅ Improved access for medical and emergency teams
✅ Faster service at refreshment stations
✅ More open road running and improved pacing opportunities
✅ More runners reaching the final stages of the race in daylight

⏱️ Every runner still receives a full 12 hours to complete The Ultimate Human Race!

All runners will continue to receive the full 12 hours to complete the race, with each group’s official race time commencing at the firing of the start gun for that specific group. Starting in an earlier group will not provide additional time to complete the race. All finishing times will be verified post-finish, with medal eligibility confirmed at the medal tent.

🚦 Enhanced Cut-off System
A clearer and more supportive way to monitor your pacing and stay on track throughout the race, please refer to the official cut-off table.

As runners approach a cut-off point, they will be provided with a simple colour-based pacing guidance warning system:

🟢 Green Zone – GO
You’re comfortably on pace. Keep moving!
🟡 Amber Zone – WARNING
Time to maintain or increase your pace to stay on track.
🔴 Red Zone – CUT-OFF
Sorry you're out of time and reached the cut-off. Runners will be required to board the official rescue buses so that roads can safely reopen.

❤️ Tradition Meets Innovation
While the race continues to evolve operationally, the spirit and traditions of Comrades Marathon remain. Runners will still experience the emotion and excitement of the National Anthem, Shosholoza, Chariots of Fire and Max Trimborn’s iconic cock-crow before heading for the hills. Group 1 runners will experience the full traditional start programme, while Groups 2 and 3 will enjoy a shortened yet equally inspirational version ahead of their respective starts.

Unable to Run #Comrades2026? Official Substitution Withdrawals Open Today 🏃‍♂️📉

If your training hasn’t gone according to plan or your circumstances have changed, you can now officially withdraw your entry and allow another runner the opportunity to take on The Ultimate Human Race through the Substitution Ballot Process.

How to Withdraw

Withdrawal Process
1. Log in to your 2026 Entry Profile via the website or app.
2. Click on “I want to substitute my entry.”
3. Follow the prompts to release your entry into the substitution pool.
4. Refund: Once your entry is successfully taken up by a runner from the Substitution Ballot, you will receive 85% of your original entry fee back.
5. Once substituted, the original entry cannot be reinstated.
6. If an entry is not successfully substituted, it will automatically remain active.
7. All withdrawing runners will be notified by 10 April 2026 of the outcome.

⚠️ Important: Do not attempt to sell your entry privately or via social media. The official substitution process is the only valid and secure way to transfer an entry. Private transfers will result in disqualification for both parties.
