This is a major diplomatic development!
For the first time, Iran is engaging all three members of the Makkah Defence Pact (Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkiye) amidst escalating Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia.
The real significance is that military deterrence is now being matched with direct dialogue. Pakistan’s role could prove crucial in preventing a wider regional war.
IMPORTANT DEVELOPMENT
Top military, defence and intelligence officials from the Makkah alliance nations are set for one of their most consequential meetings today in Tehran.
Saudi Defence Minister Khalid bin Salman, Pakistan’s military Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir and Turkish intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin will hold a joint meeting with Gen Mohsen Rezaei, a key aide to Iran’s Supreme Leader, according to Iran’s Deputy Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Baqeri.
The meeting follows Field Marshal Munir’s recent visit to Tehran. Houthi strikes on Saudi Arabia and efforts to prevent a fresh round of US strikes on Iran are expected to top the agenda.
#BREAKING: King Salman orders new financial support measures for Saudi citizens following a proposal by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, coinciding with electricity and water tariff adjustments effective January 1, 2027.
Just as US signals of renewed strikes peak (Trump floating “another little Epic Fury” / possible action “tomorrow”), Iran’s President Pezeshkian says Field Marshal Asim Munir carried Tehran’s message for reconciliation and a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Classic good-cop (political side) / bad-cop (IRGC) routine. They look aligned buying time while hardliners dig in and demand US lift blockade, sanctions, and pressures first.
Utter confusion over the state of the Iran-Pakistan border. This morning some media reports claimed that the border has reopened, but the situation on the ground tells a different story. Containers that were documented for clearance before or on Oct 16 are believed to have been allowed to pass through, but that does not clarify the future arrangement.
The latest tweet by the Iranian ambassador has clearly indicated that the issue has yet to be resolved, and he put the ball in Pakistan's court, saying there was no problem on the Iranian side.
On the Pakistani side, except for a few initial statements, there has been radio silence. This fuels speculation, and even the Iranian ambassador linked Pakistan's border closure to the US strategy to strangulate Iran through its neighbours.
Just to highlight the importance of the trade route between Pakistan and Iran, Pakistan meets 71% of its LPG requirements through imports, and 55% of those imports come via the land route from Iran.
Given that our borders with India and Afghanistan are already shut, and considering the stakes involved, authorities in Islamabad must at least clarify the situation.
The border closure has already pushed up LPG prices massively. A 12kg cylinder is now being sold in some parts of the country for around Rs 8,000. If the closure lingers, that price may go through the roof.
Remember, 25 million households in Pakistan rely on LPG.
First of all, Afghanistan has no direct land route to China, so how exactly is the LPG supposed to be redirected to China?
Secondly, Pakistan is not a landlocked country, nor is it entirely dependent on Iranian LPG. LPG shipments from Oman arrived at Karachi Port just this morning, so Pakistan has alternative sources of supply.
Lastly, stay away from such grifter accounts.
@ForumStrategic Pakistan’s primary LNG supplier is Qatar, providing the large majority (typically ~90%) under two long-term contracts. Italy’s Eni is the main secondary long-term source. Occasional spot cargoes come from the US, Azerbaijan and others. Pakistan does not import LNG from Iran.
Arunachal Pradesh, Chinese soldiers searching Indian soldiers within the state.
Indian army has to take permission from Chinese to transit through Arunachal Pradesh.
Allah’s House, Mecca, Medina, the grave of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW), the graves of the Ansar, and those who worship Allah are under attack by the terrorist Houthis and their backers in Iran. We must choose sides and not be blinded by sectarianism. Those who attack Mecca and Medina do not deserve to live. Gloves should be off.

Lahore ka Houthi. He doesn’t have a problem with visas for Karbala, but has a problem with visas for Makkah/Madinah. Absolute trash of a guy he is turning out to be.
If by this you mean a nuclear country is using both diplomatic and defensive military instruments of power to avoid a wider war in the Middle East, I’d say that’s pretty responsible leadership.
