That I am deeply invested in researching the telegraph as America prepares for its next great civil war is 1) a sure sign that, in academia as in the cyclical annals of history, plus ça change but also 2) that this is all 💯 a simulation. Anyway, back to buying JPGs.

In 1859 one Talbot Shaffner (of Kentucky) wrote an extensive history of the (then completely new) electric telegraph that begins by suggesting that the star of Bethlehem was among the first messages of the telegraphic medium.

This is a) slightly weird but ok, but also b) two years before the Am. Civil War breaks out--in which Kentucky was a key stage. That Talbot managed to write his history despite the turmoil turmoiling about him is perhaps unremarkable.
