Just been reading everything about that movie Mrs and I haven’t been able to shake it off. I cant even get myself to watch a movie like that…
Because it’s not just a movie.
It’s reality.
A reality I’ve witnessed far too closely.
A PhD gold medalist. The kind of man who looks perfect on paper. Educated. Accomplished. Worldly.
The kind of man parents would proudly introduce their daughters (mine tried once too) to.
But behind closed doors? A different story.
Controlling.
Manipulative.
Financially abusive.
He demanded that his wife hand over her entire salary, justifying it with “In the UK, wives contribute to the mortgage.”
Yes, they do—when their name is on it. When it’s a marital home, legally recognised as such. She has to provide an explanation to every penny she spends. She cant send money home to her parents but he sends all his money to India!
But he never did that.
He has kept everything in his name, made all the decisions, and treated her income like his entitlement. Along with that she has to cook, clean and take care of the kid also! There is no HELP at all! The mother-in-law comes and stays for full six months of a year!
This isn’t his first marriage.
His first wife left quickly—she saw the red flags before they turned into chains.
But this time, he has a wife who is trapped.
Why? Because she’s been completely cut off. His mother—who fuels his worst behaviour—made sure of that. His sister, just as toxic, played her part too. They isolated her from friends, from any support system. Especially from me, because I was too independent for their liking.
And now?
She barely whispers when she speaks to me.
She asks me to check in on her—not just for company, not just for reassurance. But to make sure she isn’t dead one day.
That’s how bad it is.
I have told her, as clearly as I can—whenever she decides to leave, no matter the time, no matter the day, I will be there. My car. My house. Her two-year-old. No questions asked.
Just escape! Its a decision she has to make, we can only support.
And here’s what truly shakes me: once upon a time, my own family considered this man’s family for me.
My own mother spoke to his mother. My own father believed I should marry someone just like him.
I dodged a bullet.
And I thank my stars every single day for that.
But my heart aches for the women who weren’t given that chance.
