The queer community in Munich are celebrating after Dominik Krause was elected mayor, marking a historic moment as both the first Green Party leader and the city’s first out gay mayor.

The 35-year-old secured victory with 56.4% of the vote, defeating former Social Democratic Party mayor Dieter Reiter in the run-off.

Krause, who has served on the city council since 2014 and became Second Mayor in 2023, is a Green politician, with a focus on climate action, sustainable urban development, digitalisation, and social policy.

As mayor, he has pledged to prioritise affordable housing, accelerate transport reform, strengthen climate protections, and champion an open, cosmopolitan Munich.
