Exciting progress in vulture conservation!
Over the years, UCF and Andre Botha have tracked more than 25 vultures across Uganda, including White-backed and Rüppell’s vultures.
Most recently, we may have tagged and begun tracking what could be Uganda’s first-ever Lappet-faced Vulture on the Uganda Wildlife Authority EarthRanger system.
Working alongside lion researchers and other wildlife experts across the region, we are gaining remarkable insights into the movements, behaviour, and ecology of these critically important birds.
The data being collected is both fascinating and invaluable for conservation efforts.
Africa’s vultures face significant threats, from poisoning and habitat loss to power line collisions and declining food availability, making this work more important than ever.
We look forward to sharing our findings and publishing the results of this exciting research in the near future.
Thank you to our partners and colleagues at @ugwildlife (UWA) and to Andre Botha, Co-Chair of the IUCN Vulture Specialist Group, for their continued leadership and collaboration in protecting Africa’s vultures.

Isn't this a good thing?
From an ecological and conservation perspective, that is.
Last time I heard, the heavy human traffic to the Mara was a threat to the ecosystem.
The chickens have come home to roost.
— Maasai Mara visitor numbers fell for the second straight year after Narok County raised entry fees by up to 3x in 2024.

Official Statement on Tourist Safety in the Maasai Mara National Reserve
We wish to reassure all stakeholders and visitors that the Maasai Mara remains safe and secure.
The allegations currently circulating are misleading, with no confirmed incidents to support them. Security agencies and tourism stakeholders continue to work closely to maintain a safe environment for all.

His Majesty Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, the Kabaka of Buganda, has visited Murchison Falls National Park, showing that our national parks are perfect for relaxation, reflection, and recreation any day of the year, not just during festive seasons.
His visit is a powerful reminder to embrace domestic tourism, connect with nature, and support conservation efforts. If our cultural leader can make time for nature, so can we.
Let’s be inspired to explore Uganda’s national parks year-round and preserve our natural heritage for generations to come.
