Thanks to everyone who's engaged with us so far. From now on we're not going to get into discussions about individual posts, or we'll have no time to do anything else; of course feel free to retweet things yourself if you want to discuss with others.
@sambailey1976@Tabbysnail@OhSarahSavage@MumsnetTowers Oh absolutely, but in order to report a post you need to be logged in, and not everyone wants to have to set up a MN account in order to do that. Plus, the other aim of this is to counter the narrative that hate speech doesn't exist on MN.
@sambailey1976@Tabbysnail@OhSarahSavage@MumsnetTowers Well we'll see - it's been about five hours so far, I wasn't expecting instant miracles. If in a few days it's clearly not adding much then we'll stop. But people I respect had requested somewhere to send things, so it seemed worth trying. I'm happy to sink a bit of effort in.
@sambailey1976@Tabbysnail@OhSarahSavage@MumsnetTowers Yep totally agree. Not doing anything other than shining a light on the problem and saying, "it is happening, and it's not ok". MN have helpfully said that they will act on anything reported on twitter, so hopefully this'll speed that up.
@sambailey1976@Tabbysnail@OhSarahSavage@MumsnetTowers Well it's definitely true that I expect hatred and bigotry from those other sites, plus I have no knowledge of them and have never been there. So there is absolutely an element of getting our own house in order.
@Tabbysnail@OhSarahSavage@MumsnetTowers Ok. With the utmost respect, I'm not convinced that you are asking as a genuine question, & I think what will happen now is I'll spend an hour trying to answer in as much helpful detail as possible and nothing will change. I can point you in the direction of some things to read?
@BillBaggins96 @Indy_Leya @OhSarahSavage@MumsnetTowers It's an interesting question of to what extent a platform can/should take responsibility for the content that's posted on it. Personally I think they could be doing much more than just removing posts. But that's not the purpose of this account.
@sambailey1976@Tabbysnail@OhSarahSavage@MumsnetTowers Many reasons, including (1) the denial that this is happening on MN, (2) MN is fab but I feel increasingly uncomfortable there, (3) can't do everything - if you want to set up a similar feed for those then pls do and I'll support.
@NYBusiness3@OhSarahSavage@MumsnetTowers Again, total opposite of silencing women. Not sure why you think it's ok to silence this account by preventing it from flagging these posts?
@BillBaggins96 @Indy_Leya @OhSarahSavage@MumsnetTowers Yes, which is why we are flagging to MN so they can better identify and remove. If you get into any discussion on Twitter you will discover that many people do not believe that it exists. Unless you want to get into a level of metadenial and deny that the denial is happening?
@Tabbysnail@OhSarahSavage@MumsnetTowers Ok, then I suggest you have this discussion with the person who flagged the post and ask if they can explain why these posts are not reasonable or respectful.
@sambailey1976@Tabbysnail@OhSarahSavage@MumsnetTowers Nope that's not what I said. Being a fact and using/saying that in a transphobic (or homophobic, or racist or sexist) way are not mutually exclusive. If you went up to someone and shouted "GAY" in their face, it wouldn't be ok just because it happened to be true.
@NYBusiness3@OhSarahSavage@MumsnetTowers Nope, entirely wrong about that. Always fighting for all women's voices to be heard as often and as loudly as possible. Shutting down the views of those who value equality is not free speech; exclusive debate is not free speech; hate speech is not free speech.
@Tabbysnail@OhSarahSavage@MumsnetTowers should take that at face value as a starting point. Continuing to (often aggressively) dismiss people when they say that those words/actions are hurtful to them, can be in itself harmful and oppressive.
@Tabbysnail@OhSarahSavage@MumsnetTowers You seem to have answered your own question there by deciding that those two instances are not transphobic. But (a) there are laws that govern this, I can send you links if you want and (b) broadly speaking, if a member of a community says that set of words/actions is hurtful, we
@Tabbysnail@OhSarahSavage@MumsnetTowers Ok. (1) that you can't see they are transphobic does not mean they are not; (2) even if a post includes a fact, something being factually accurate and it being transphobic are not mutually exclusive - tone and context are relevant.
@zazmeister I'm sorry you think that someone you've never met should have all the answers to this, I don't. You don't seem to either so on that we appear to agree. As stated earlier, if you are not here to report transphobia on Mumsnet then please discuss elsewhere.
