At a meeting called at his instance on Thursday to address the Foreign Exchange crisis and the problem of economic downturn, among others, Bola Tinubu failed, yet again, to showcase any concrete policy steps that his administration is taking to contain the crises of currency fluctuation and poverty that face the country.

Rather, he told the country and experts who have been offering ideas on how to resolve the crisis that he and his team should not be distracted and allowed time to continue cooking their cocktail that has brought untold hardship to the people of Nigeria.

I don't agree with that.

The wrong policies of the Tinubu administration continue to cause untold pain and distress on the economy and the rest of us cannot keep quiet when, clearly, the government has demonstrated sufficient poverty of ideas to redeem the situation.

If the government will not hold on to their usual hubris, there are ways that the country can walk out of the current crisis.

After a careful assessment of the state of our economy at the twilights of the last administration, I knew full well that the economy of the country was heading for the ditch and came up with a number of policy prescriptions that would rescue the country from getting into the mess that we are currently in.

Those ideas, encapsulated in my policy document titled: My Covenant With Nigerians made the following prescriptions:

1. I had signed on to a commitment to reform the operation of the foreign exchange market. Specifically, there was a commitment to eliminate multiple exchange rate windows. The system only served to enrich opportunists, rent-seekers, middlemen, arbitrageurs, and fraudsters.

2. A fixed exchange rate system would be out of the question. First, it would not be in line with our philosophy of running an open, private sector friendly economy. Secondly, operating a successful fixed-exchange rate system would require sufficient FX reserves to defend the domestic currency at all times. But as is well known, Nigeria’s major challenge is the persistent FX illiquidity occasioned by limited foreign exchange inflows to the country. Without sufficient FX reserves, confidence in the Nigerian economy will remain low, and Naira will remain under pressure. The economy will have no firepower to support its currency. Besides, a fixed-exchange rate system is akin to running a subsidy regime!

3. On the other hand, given Nigeria’s underlying economic conditions, adopting a floating exchange rate system would be an overkill. We would have encouraged the Central Bank of Nigeria to adopt a gradualist approach to FX management. A managed-floating system would have been a preferred option. In simple terms, in such a system, the Naira may fluctuate daily, but the CBN will step in to control and stabilize its value. Such control will be exercised judiciously and responsibly, especially to curve speculative activities.

4. Why control, you may ask.

(i). Nigeria has insufficient, unstable, and precarious foreign reserves to support a free-floating rate regime. Nigeria’s reserves did not have enough foreign exchange that can be sold freely at fair market prices during crises.

(ii). Nigeria is not earning enough US$ from its sales of crude oil because its production of oil has been declining. And,

(iii). Nigeria is not attracting foreign investment in appreciable quantities.

These are enough reasons for Nigeria to seek to have a greater control of the market, at least in the short to medium term when convergence is expected to be achieved.

Tinubu’s new policy FX management policy was hurriedly put together without proper plans and consultations with stakeholders. The government failed to anticipate or downplayed the potential and real negative consequences of its actions

A. alternata is a black spore producing fungus capable of producing over 70 classes of toxins harmful to human health. I investigated the role of the red (FphA) and blue (LreA) light photoreceptors and the interplay with the high-osmolarity glycerol (HOG) mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase pathway. Loss- of function mutations for fphA, lreA, and hogA were created using the CRISPR-Cas9 technology. Part of the findings of this study, which has been published in mBio, showed that high-osmolarity sensing required FphA and LreA, suggesting a complex cross talk between light and stress signaling.

I read some of your research articles, and the area of research being pursued in your group is very interesting. Your recent publication on XXX caught my attention and I will appreciate an opportunity to discuss potential research ideas that align with your area of interest.

Peace, God’s mercy and blessings be upon you.

This is how Muslims and Arabs greet others: with a wish for the other to be blessed with peace and the mercy of God.

Our religion came with a message of peace. The Pact of Omar, issued at the gates of Jerusalem almost 15 centuries ago, more than a thousand years before the Geneva Conventions, ordered Muslim soldiers not to kill a child, a woman or an old person, not to destroy a tree, not to harm a priest, not to destroy a church.

Those are the rules of engagement that Muslims must accept and abide by, as should all those who believe in our common humanity. All civilian lives matter!

I am outraged and grieved by those acts of violence waged against innocent civilians in Gaza, in the West Bank, and Israel.

The relentless bombing campaign underway in Gaza as we speak is cruel and unconscionable—on every level.

It is collective punishment of a besieged and helpless people.

It is a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law.

It is a war crime.

Yet, the deeper the crisis cuts of cruelty, the less the world seems to care.

Anywhere else, attacking civilian infrastructure and deliberately starving an entire population of food, water, electricity, and basic necessities would be condemned. Accountability would be enforced, immediately, unequivocally.

And it has been done before—recently, in another conflict.

But not in Gaza. It’s been two weeks since Israel put in place the complete siege of the Gaza Strip. And still, for the most part, global silence.

Yet the message the Arab world is hearing is loud and clear: Palestinian lives matter less than Israeli ones. Our lives matter less than other lives. The application of international law is optional. And human rights have boundaries—they stop at borders, they stop at races, and they stop at religions.

That is a very, very dangerous message, as the consequences of continued international apathy and inaction will be catastrophic—on us all.

We cannot let raw emotions dictate the moment; our priorities today are clear and urgent:

First: An immediate end to the war on Gaza, the protection of civilians, and the adoption of a unified position that indiscriminately condemns the targeting of all civilians, in line with our shared values and international law, which loses all value if it is implemented selectively.

Second: The sustained and uninterrupted delivery of humanitarian aid, fuel, food, and medicines to the Gaza Strip.

Third: The unequivocal rejection of the forced displacement or internal displacement of the Palestinians. This is a war crime according to international law, and a red line for all of us.

This conflict, my friends, did not start two weeks ago, and it will not stop if we continue down this blood-soaked path. We know all too well that it will only lead to more of the same—a zero-sum game of death and destruction, of hatred and hopelessness played on repeat.

Today, Israel is literally starving civilians in Gaza, but for decades, Palestinians have been starved of hope, of freedom, and a future.

Because when the bombs stop falling, Israel is never held accountable, the injustices of occupation continue and the world walks away, until the next round of violence. The bloodshed we are witnessing today is the price of that, of failing to make tangible progress towards a political horizon that brings peace for Palestinians and Israelis alike.

Israeli leadership must realise that there is no military solution to its security concerns, that it cannot continue to sideline the five million Palestinians living under its occupation, denied of their legitimate rights, and that Palestinians lives are no less valuable than Israeli lives.

The Israeli leadership must realise, once and for all, that a state can never thrive if it is built on the foundations of injustice.

Over the past 15 years, we have seen how the dreams of a two-state solution and the hopes of an entire generation have turned into despair. This has been the policy of hardline Israeli leadership—to focus solely on security over peace and create new illegal realities on the ground that render an autonomous Palestinian state unviable. In the process, it has empowered extremists on both sides.

But we must not—we cannot—write off this conflict as too far gone, for the sake of both the Palestinians and the Israelis.

Our collective and unified message to the Israeli people should be: We want a future of peace and security for you and for the Palestinians, where your children and Palestinian children should no longer live in fear.

It is our duty as the international community to do whatever it takes to restart a meaningful political process that can take us to a just and sustainable peace on the basis of the two-state solution.

The only path to a safe and secure future for the people of the Middle East and the entire world—for the Jewish people, for Christians, for Muslims alike—starts with the belief that every human life is of equal value and it ends with two states, Palestine and Israel, sharing land and peace from the river to the sea.

The time to act is now.

On Economic Boycotts and the incorrect opinion that it's contingent on government approval:

al-Bukhari narrates that after Thumama Ibn Uthāl accepted Islam, the Prophet ��� gave him glad tidings & ordered him to perform the `Umra. When he came to Mecca, someone said to him, "So you've become a heretic?!" Thumama replied, "No! By Allah, I have embraced Islam with Muhammad, Apostle of Allah. No, by Allah! Not a single grain of wheat will come to you from Yamamah unless the Prophet gives his permission."

On this Hadith, Ibn Hubaira (d.560) says:
He [Thumama] stood in place of an entire army in cutting off supplies from his people reaching the polytheists. In this is permissibility of cutting off supplies from polytheists until they submit to the command of Allah. (Al-Ifsāh, 6/383).
Note as well:
-- Note as well that Thumama has just become Muslim, yet recognized the need to weaken the Prophet's enemies.
-- Thumama and his people lived in Najd, and were not allied with or under the political authority of the Prophet ﷺ.
-- Thumama also took this action independently, He did not seek prior approval of the Prophet ﷺ nor did he wait for it.
-- His action was equated by Ibn Hubaira to be equal "an entire army."

DEALING WITH UK BORDER FORCE ON ARRIVAL IN THE UK.

I was contacted on a sad immigration case some hours ago.

The prospective student landed at Heathrow Airport yesterday with a validly issued student visa. The Border Force staff who attended to him started querying his educational certificates which were genuine and threatened him until he said it was not a genuine school certificate out of fear.

He arrived yesterday and they took his phone from him and did not tell him he can get a lawyer. The poor soul eventually got to me at the last minute. Before I could say Jack, they had removed him wrongfully. The return flight was slated for 6pm and he got to me very, very late.

If you are planning to come to the UK, have a lawyer’s details ready from now on. It does not have to be me as some deranged people may think I am advertising.

Immediately, you are stopped and it is not going well, tell them you need to contact your lawyer. Insist on talking to your lawyer. They won’t kill you.

After doing this job for over 20 years, I can tell you confidently that a lot of the Border Force staff are inexperienced or racist. Tonight’s case was an example of that.

Let me repeat again, stop panicking at the border. If not, you will be removed unlawfully. I will still fight for the client but he should not have been removed📌
