But this is what bickering like kids gets you, we had a good thing going with afrobeats which was simply a fusion of pop/hiphop/RnB with Nigerian (African) lingo, folksy instrumentation, call & response etc.

until all of una decide to be saying no I’m not “Afrobeat” artist, and now you’ll get lost in the sea of other pop music whre you can’t compete, we are gradually going back tot he days of when our pop/urban music was grouped with “best world music”
Or “best folk music”. Get ready for some Mongolian throat singer to pack all the awards going forward bcos you think they’ll nominate you for “Best RnB/hiphop” from Magodo in the same category with Billie Eilis or Taylor swift & you’ll win w/o the label backing & infrastructure that those acts have I have a beach to sell to you in the Sahara desert.

The best recourse now is to just call it African Pop or Afropop but that one self go cos problem bcos of you know who! But basically our music all popular/urban music at the end of the day be it Afrobeats, Bongo flava, amapiano, siukous, gqom, Hiplife, whatever it’s all Pop music! Having a distinct label & category was never a pigeon hole it was just the fastest lever to get international recognition w/o having to compete with juggernauts like Drake, Taylor swift, Kendrick, Billie Eilish, Khalid, bad bunny etc.
